We read the book "Swimmy" by author/illustrator Leo Lionni, as our inspiration for students to create their own school of fish. Students began by sketching multiple options of fish in their sketchbooks, and then choosing one and making a custom stencil of an original fish. Next, they traced their stencil to create rhythm and movement in the composition. To complete the artwork, the fish were painted using watercolor paints, and a salt technique was used on the ocean to create an underwater texture. Vocabulary discussed: composition, overlapping, rhythm, balance, pigment & salt technique.
