2nd - Poppies

In honor of Veteran's Day students learned about Poppies and their importance, as well as Art Therapy and how it is used with veterans. We then used mixed media, oil pastels, chalk, and watercolors to create our collaged poppies in beautiful vases. We studied Georgia O'Keefe and her zoomed in flowers as the inspiration for our flowers, and students learned how to break down a natural shape into geometric shapes to create these beautiful flowers. The vases were created using the art therapy method of relaxing music, closed eyes and drawing what you felt... We then cut out the vase shape afterwards on the back of the paper so students did not know what part of their therapeutic drawing would be the vase. We ended reviewing the vocabulary of wax and oil resist, geometric vs natural shapes, abstract vs realistic drawings, overlapping, and blending.
