As inspiration for this project, 1st graders explored robot-themed artwork and discussed how robots are used—and what kinds of robots could be useful in their own lives. Students then designed a robot with a specific function, drawing it from a combination of different geometric shapes.
We then mixed a true blue color with white to create a tint, and used that paint to complete a horizon line and stamp Lego bricks onto their background paper for an interesting design. Our final addition was to add highlights with white chalk, and pops of color with colored pencils to emphasize their robot’s most important features.
The results are imaginative, colorful, and full of futuristic personality!
Vocabulary: geometric vs. natural shapes, horizon line, tint, and highlights.
