2nd - Zoomed In Owl

Students focused on creating a cropped composition of an up-close view of an owl, inspired by the book Hoot Owl, Master of Disguise by Sean Taylor. Students used metallic sharpies, metallic colored pencils, and oil pastels on black paper to create high contrast images. Some vocabulary discussed: perspective, concentric circles, contrasting colors, overlapping, & patterning.

Sneaking in a little science connection we also talked owl facts while the kids worked and we learned that owls can't chew food, but they tear and swallow it whole. They have silent, soft feathers that help them sneak up on prey. A group of owls is called a "parliament". Owls have extremely good hearing, and are farsighted, which means they can't see things up close. They have special, flexible necks that can turn 270 degrees without moving their bodies.
