After looking through past dragon artworks such as Hokusai’s Dragons as inspiration for this project, 5th graders were asked to revisit familiar concepts like form, value, texture, contrast, pattern, and emphasis during their own dragon eye creation. Students use reference photos to examine animal eyes as inspiration to create their own from those photos. Students learn about the repetition of scales, the difference between tactile and implied textures & how to use tints and shades of a color to create shadows and highlights. Students were asked to focus on just the eye, and the surrounding details. Students were also encouraged to really individualize each scale and hone in on the skill of shading, and layering to craft a strikingly enlarged dragon eye. Those looking for a challenge were allowed to create a reflection in the eye as well.
