SMS Virtual Academic Fair, 5th Grade, Class of 2021

Fifth Grade Academic Fair-
As part of the Fifth Grade Writing Portfolio, students enhanced their writing and creative, artistic skills with a Pumpkin Biography and a Persuasive Turkey Letter.  For the Pumpkin Biography, students researched a famous American and wrote a two-paragraph biographical sketch using the Writing Process.  Students were given a "pumpkin head" template where they used scraps and odds and ends to create a three- or two-dimensional artistic and realistic face of their famous American.  For the Persuasive Turkey Letter, students reviewed the elements of persuasive writing and developed this writing skill by creating a persuasive letter, written to the President of the United States (Mr. Goldberg, Dr. Galvez, or Mrs. Hawthorne).  In these letters, students made their case for being chosen by the President  as the one turkey who will be pardoned, and therefore escape being the main course for Thanksgiving dinner.  Students again used the Writing Process, focusing on the use of persuasive writing strategies and language, which were taught in class.  Fifth graders then put their creative, artistic skills to the test by creating the turkey they descriptively described in their letters.
