Phoenix Drawings

How To Draw A Phoenix For their first creative challenge of the school year 5th Grade was given the artistic challenge to draw a Phoenix and create a visual story using their creative imagination. To begin we looked at our example artworks. Then we answered our talking point questions: What composes an artistic composition? Can you create an image using basic lines and shapes? What do these vocabulary words mean: foreground, middle ground, background, and value. Do you have any concerns or worries that you would like to discuss? What is an artistic statement? Following our group discussion students followed multi step directions as Ms. Rizzo gave a guided drawing lesson of a Phoenix. Once students layed out their basic line formations of their Phoenix they were shown how to manipulate the graphite to create value and shading within the subject matter. Students then were given the artistic freedom to develop their foreground, middle ground, and background using their creative imagination. Once students completed their image using lines they had the choice to develop their visual story using only pencil or incorporating color using colored pencils. 

Skills Developing:

• Students will be introduced to the concept of graphite drawing
• Learning control over drawing tools 
• Developing a complex drawing of a form using the built up of layering simple lines and shapes
•  Students will also be introduced to new vocabulary words: foreground, middle ground, background, and value

• Strengthening artistic confidence
• Developing the ability to talk about their creative process, decisions, and using problem solving skills
