Tiger Eyes

Tiger Eyes For their first creative challenge of the school year 4th Grade was introduced to the concept of observational drawing. To begin this unit we looked at photos of tiger eyes and talked about tiger facts. Then we discussed what we observed in the photos and video. Students then were given their challenge to create their own artistic vision of tiger eyes using their observational skills. As a group we answered our talking point questions: What do you see as you look into the eyes of these tigers? Have you ever explored using oil pastels? Can you give examples of these words: contrast, symmetry, pattern, warm colors, tones, neutrals, subject matter, and artistic statement? What are your thoughts on this challenge? Do you have any concerns and how can you overcome these? Following our discussion students followed multi step directions on how to use basic lines to lay out their composition using a pencil. As students became ready to incorporate color into their piece Ms. Rizzo gave a demonstration on how to manipulate the medium of oil pastel. As they incorporated their color they focused on comparing neutral tones and warm colors to build their tigers. Then they incorporated black and white to develop their patterns and contrast.
