Foreshortened Animals in Colored Pencil

Students drew an animal with a foreshortened snout and/or body. Kindergarteners drew lions; 1st-3rd graders drew alligators. 4th and 5th graders drew rhinoceroses, and middle schoolers drew golden retrievers. Students learned how to layer colored pencils to create new colors, how to use a lighter colored pencil to lighten a color, and how to shade to create a three-dimensional object or animal. Each class learned how to draw and shade the following 3-dimensional objects: cube, sphere, and cone. Students also practiced outlining so that their animal didn't disappear into the background. Students were required to burnish their entire picture before the picture was considered finished. Burnishing is when one colors colored pencils to the point that the page feels waxy.
