Fifth grade took a look at Wassily Kandinsky's landscapes from his Fauvism period. Characterized by bold layered colors in an impressionistic style, Fauvism was a great opportunity for students to practice layering oil pastel colors. The activity was made even more interesting by using soap to draw the design on black paper first. When their page was completely filled with color, the artwork was submerged in water and agitated, causing the soap lines to dissolve, leaving a bold black outline and creating an incredible dramatic piece.
