Graffiti Project

Graffiti holds many spaces in our society. It is an illegal nuisance that creates property damage and makes buildings less desirable. It gives beauty an life to long forgotten abandoned buildings or architectural spaces that would otherwise be overlooked. It allows the voiceless to have an amplified voice without the filters of media. It is used by criminal organizations to mark space. It is used by billion-dollar companies to appear cool, of the people and culturally relevant. All of these things are true. What is also true is it is a thriving art movement created in the United States by black and brown teenagers. For this project students will learn about the history of graffiti and develop an appreciation of the art form, and students will learn to execute this style of art while applying the ideas of color theory when creating their own original art. Student artists will create a large-scale graffiti piece influenced by one of the three primary graffiti styles: Block, Bubble, and Wild Style. The work should both reflect an understanding of graffiti, but also an understanding of how to use color to convey an idea.
