Mosaic Self Portraits

Mrs. Buteau's seventh grade students created self portrait mosaics. They began by taking a picture of themselves with dramatic lighting then printed it. Next, they discussed value and painted a value scale with 5-6 colors ranging from white to black. A sheet of acetate was taped over the printed picture, and pieces of torn and sometimes cut paper were glued to the acetate corresponding to the corret value in the photograph. Once the mosaic was completed and glue was dry, the students peeled their mosaic off of the acetata and glued it on a sheet of black paper. Almost every student was pleased with their self portrait! They were amazed at what they were able to accomplish. We set up a mini gallery in our room and students voted on the following categories: most dramatic, widest range in value, best expression, fan favorite, and most realistic/ recognizable. I am so proud of these seventh graders. Enjoy the virtual show!
