Meet Jen Volkmer
from Hoover Elementary School
Council Bluffs, Iowa
Biography
Hello all and welcome! My name is Mrs. Volkmer and I am so grateful to be teaching art to some extraordinary students at Hoover and Lewis and Clark Elementary Schools! Prior to becoming an art teacher, I was a second-grade teacher within the same district. I have taught elementary art for the past decade and hope to continue teaching until I retire. My favorite part of teaching is when students get excited about what they are creating. A phrase I use often in the art room is, "Practice makes better, not perfect." I expect everyone to try their best. Trying your best, even when something is difficult, will produce positive results.
My first degree is a Bachelors of Art in Art History and Criticism from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. I moved to Omaha when my husband wanted to attend culinary school. At that time I went back to receive my Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Nebraska in Omaha. Finally, I completed my Masters of Art in Art Education from the University of Nebraska in Kearney.
A few things about me:
I have two sons. My oldest is a 3rd grader in Millard. He loves math and Legos. My youngest is a very busy two year old who loves to climb or lift himself over all kinds of obstacles. Both boys have red hair as does my husband. We are a red headed family!
My favorite art supplies are paint, paint markers, clay, and sharpies.
In my free time I enjoy embroidery by hand, felting, creating birthday crowns and banners.
I look forward to getting to know each of the students I teach this school year. Let's have a wonderful school year!
