In China, artists have been using brush and ink for over two thousand years to create poetry and paintings. Chinese artists study many years to master the exact stroke for the perfect Chinese character, bird or leaf. During the Song Dynasty (920-1279), fantastic landscapes were painted on silk in rolls, one foot wide by thirty feet. These scrolls, called hand scrolls were meant to be unrolled a little at a time so the viewer could walk through the painting, down a path over a bridge, and into the mountains. Fourth grade artists used the same tools and techniques to create a scroll of their own. Can you find: a printed chop chinese character, sumi-e brush strokes, and/or a landscape with nature? Enjoy!
