Kindergarten and First Grade learned about lines and shapes from Larry and Linda the Line.
Kindergarten learned lines start at one point and go to another point. They can follow the leader, dot, zigzag, be horizontal, diagonal, or vertical - or do anything they want! Once lines become closed, they become shapes. Shapes can look like a robot - geometric with straight lines and regular curves. Shapes can also look like nature - organic. We learned that paintbrushes are like ballerina toes. They stay pointed and lightly brush across the paper. Ballerina toes don't like to squish or stomp. Ballerina's also like to stay clean so they take a foot bath and use a towel to get dry when going from one paint color to the next. We noticed that when we mixed colors, they became new colors. If we mixed too many, they turned brown or gray-ish.
First grade reviewed lines and shapes. We added information about using space in open compositions. Open compositions have parts that go off the page. We also reviewed painting procedures. Information from last year that some student's recalled as working were mixing tints and shades and making new colors!
