Hispanic Heritage Month: Fantastical Cityscapes Inspired by Xul Solar
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, students explored the imaginative world of Argentine artist Xul Solar, known for his colorful, dreamlike landscapes and unusual architecture. We studied his 1939 painting Ciuda Lagui, observing how he combined buildings, ladders, pathways, and floating structures to create fantastical cities that seem to come straight from a dream.
Inspired by his artwork, students created their own imaginative cityscapes using construction paper, chalk pastels, and markers. They experimented with overlapping shapes, different building sizes, and creative arrangements to bring their fantasy cities to life. Students chose between daytime and nighttime settings, added rolling hills, and designed unique buildings connected by ladders and pathways.
Through this project, students celebrated Hispanic heritage while discovering how artists use their imagination and personal perspectives to represent the world in unexpected ways. Our young artists learned that art doesn't always have to look realistic and that creativity allows us to transform ordinary places into extraordinary worlds!
