6th grade learned the difference between Positive and Negative space! We also looked into skeletal anatomy of humans and animals and fish and decided which section of bones we would like to incorporate into our project. Many students chose skulls or ribcages due to the equitable amount of positive and negative space available. Next, the artists had to decide how they wanted to fill in their spaces. They chose between zentangles (deliberate doodle patterns) or collage. If they chose negative space collage (background) they chose images of a similar color. If they chose their positive space to collage (bones) they used recycled dictionary pages!
