Renaissance means “rebirth” and marks a new start. The Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s-30s was a rebirth of African American art, music and literature that centered in Harlem, New York. This Harlem Renaissance unit features artists whose influences shaped the world we live in today, such as Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Horace Pippin, William Johnson, James Van Der Zee and Alma Thomas. Each grade had an opportunity to create a wonderful piece of art while learning about an inspiring artist and the Harlem Renaissance’s impact on civil rights and reform. By learning about this cultural movement, students were invited to create art and celebrate the creative energy and passion for equal rights that influenced Harlem Renaissance artists.
