3rd grade artists explored identity and creativity through mixed media animal collages made with paper and fabric. Students began by practicing observational drawing, studying animal models closely to notice shapes, lines, and details. They learned about the history of animal symbolism in art and discussed how animals can represent human qualities. Each student then chose an animal that reflected something about their own personality and created a fabric habitat for it. To complete their collages, they added a descriptive word to express the connection between themselves and their chosen animal.
