Students learned about a holiday in Southern Mexico known as Dia de las Muertos (Day of the Dead) where they celebrate relatives who have died by visiting cemeteries, decorating ofrendas, and making sugar skulls. For this project, students focused on showing symmetry (the same on both sides) in their paper sugar skulls. Then they were invited to use collage materials to create a frame for their sugar skulls again focusing on symmetry. Students could dedicate their sugar skulls to a family member who died, someone alive that they care about or just be a sugar skull designer.
