The Hexagon PRoject presented an outreach hexagon-making event during this project. NAMI Northeast Region PA Uses Humor to Remove Stigma around Mental Health
Diabetes. Heart disease. Bipolar disorder. They’re all health conditions. But they’re not all talked about the same because of stigma that still exists around mental health diagnoses.
There are many factors and reasons why people are living with a variety of mental illnesses in this country, but the imminent fact is that we need to address mental health as if it is part of overall health, because it is, and we need to talk about it openly, offering more tools for people to cope and heal. NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Northeast Region PA offers many resources, education and support to help people living with mental health conditions, and the families. And during Mental Health Awareness Month in May, they are hosting special events to lift hearts and open minds through humor.
Thanks in part to a grant from The Humor Therapy Fund of the Scranton Area Foundation that disperses grants annually to nonprofits to spread healing through humor and laughter in the greater Scranton area, NAMI is able to offer the community some healing through mental health advocate and comedian Gab Bonesso.
Bonesso, who hails from Pittsburgh, is a nationally-recognized speaker and award-winning comedian who has opened for comedy veterans such as Richard Lewis, Fortune Feimster, Liz Winstead and many others. And, she is living
