Focusing on Process yields better Products, whereas focusing on Product is setting yourself up for failure. Unfortunately some parents laugh at or don't understand students "Blind/Pure Contor Drawings" because they look like scribbles & chicken scratch- but that's a "drill that builds skills" like "running lines" in basketball or football, or playing scales in band. Pure Contour is when kids learn to observe the subject slowly & carefully while simultaneously recording their perceptions. They aren't allowed to look at their paper, only the model or still-life. It's like telling a base/softball player to keep their eye on the ball, or telling a basketball player ignore the ball and to not take their eyes off the hoop during a free throw. Always trust the process.
The annual mountain Drawing students are challenged to climb. My annual demonstration/example. If they make it beyond base camp, they gain tremendous skills. If the permit me as their sherpa, to lead them to the summit, almost any drawing subject will be within their grasp. Many bask in the panoramic view from the top. Some struggle, yet make tremendous gains, but have to keep hiking on their own. Some, sad to say, refuse to lace up their boots, load their pack and even leave the comfort of the lodge.
As you can all see, I let my page it a little too wet, not just damp, so it started to warp and buckle, which might be why I got the pooling and mottling (splotchy stuff) going on in areas.
