My applied philosophy on the progression of elementary art education within the rigorous curriculum provided by the State of Florida and Pinellas County School Board is phased. While every group has exposure to the Elements of Art and the Principals of Design, age and individual abilities determine how they are applied. With young learners, Kindergarten through second grade, the motto is, “I can create”; working on learning and applying the seven Elements of Art: line, form, color, shape, space, value, and ... read moretexture. This early learner phase focuses on the fundamentals. Students/children develop fine motor skills, techniques, confidence, and (hopefully) freedom of expression. Third grade to fifth grade the motto becomes, “I can communicate”, working on learning and applying the ten Principles of Design: Contrast, Balance, Emphasis, Pattern, Rhythm, Movement, Unity, Repetition, Proportion, and Variety. These are how to apply the Elements of Art. This phase focuses on art for communication, for exploring ideas, and for expressing ourselves in ways that are universally understood, including and in addition to verbal languages. When done properly, this art education progression develops fine motor skills and coordination, provides children/students access to creative expression, educates about many cultures, and supports growth of problem-solving skills, encouraging emotional development, and provides a positive outlet for expressing and communicating feelings. When done right art enlivens, enriches, and motivates everyone it touches.
