This is my 30th year teaching visual art at Caledonia-Mumford Elementary School in Caledonia, NY. I currently teach children in grades K-6. I am very proud of all the students that I have the privilege of teaching. They are such unique and creative young people!
Cal-Mum students participate in a very balanced visual arts education that involves more than the “make and take/cut and paste" projects that are very often done in regular classroom situations. Students receive instruction in art production, ... read more art history, art criticism, and aesthetics. All lessons are designed to build one upon the other in a consistent and cumulative manner within each grade level and from one grade level to the next. The visual arts curriculum is also designed to integrate into the regular curriculum areas. Students are engaged in visual art lessons that reinforce and bring to life what they learn in other subjects. The children are encouraged to create, read, write, and talk about art as they discover the value of the visual arts and their relationship to their classroom curriculum. This type of integrated, spiraling art curriculum ultimately provides opportunities for my students to develop higher level thinking skills and original problem solving skills that will provide positive effects on their achievement in other subject areas. It is great to know that all students leave my classroom armed with skills that they can use daily to help reach their potential.
