Welcome to the Artsonia web-site! We will be using this site as a portal for viewing your child’s artwork that they have created at Louise White School. My goal is that as your child completes each project, I will photograph each work and upload it to this site. I would like it to develop into a digital portfolio that will contain all of the artwork that your child creates during their time with me. I would also like to share a piece of my teaching philosophy which begins with the topic of Visual Culture. This was a major topic during my art education career at Northern Illinois University.
Visual Culture can be thought of as a way of teaching the student about the world around them. This can consist of almost anything including television advertisements, cartoons, and the endless supply of internet content. By teaching the student to look more critically at the things around them they will be more understanding of their culture and their environment.
The technical arts such as interactive gaming, web-design and 3D-animation also play a major role in modern day culture. Because of how prevalent the technical arts are, I have designed lessons for the older students to use computers as an art-making tool along with more traditional forms of art. Not only are there an increasing number of jobs in the field of graphic design, but our children are interacting with web-sites, games and animations constantly. This is why I try to incorporate technology into to the art curriculum here at Louise White School.
It is also important to remember the art that has preceded the modern versions with which we have become familiar. We will learn about many of the famous classical artists such as Piet Mondrian, Vincent Van Gogh, and Pablo Picasso. We will also study more recent artists like Andy Warhol, Faith Ringgold and Diego Rivera.
