Susan Griffin
Susan Griffin has been teaching art for sixteen years, the last fourteen for Southington Local Schools, a small rural district in Ohio. Her teaching assignment is quite challenging, as she is the only art specialist for the district. In the course of a single school day Griffin teaches high school, junior high school and elementary classes. Griffin said, "I found my schedule difficult the first year or so, but I've been teaching this way so long it's normal! While developing lessons for such a broad range o ... read moref grade levels can be difficult at times, I love that I am in a unique position to watch my students mature from little children to young adults." Griffin continues, "I am very proud of the program I have built here. I try to do a little more each year."
Computer technology plays an important role in Southington's art program. From using the Internet as a research tool to offering computer graphics classes on the high school level, Griffin is always on the lookout for ways to incorporate technology. Griffin's students have visited famous museums through CD-ROMs and met working artists through distance learning experiences. "I am always finding great web sites to use in the classroom," she said.
Griffin's junior high class recently taped an episode of "Sharing Art", a new art series developed by a local PBS station. "The students really enjoyed that experience, the project was a lot of fun," Griffin explains, "after manipulating their digital self-portrait using PhotoShop and printing the image on transparency film, the students used acrylics to add color with a pop art style in mind." Griffin looks forward to a new project this year, recycling lids into art. "The community has been saving lids for me all summer. I can't wait to see what we create. I'll be sure to post the project on Artsonia for everybody to see."
