The following favorite quotes reflect my teaching philosophy :
Creativity is as important as literacy ~ Sir Ken Robinson Creativity is intelligence having fun ~ Albert Einstein
As the world shifts focus to modern, more challenging curriculums in order to accommodate today's global society, the visual arts continue to move up in status. Naturally inquiry based, they are now recognized as perhaps one of the most essential core academic subjects offered. Beginning a formal art education/visual lit ... read moreeracy program at a young age plays a pivotal roll in the educational and personal growth and development necessary for ALL children regardless of their future aspirations. It has been well established that a proper visual arts education elicits critical thinking and problem solving practices not always prevalent in a regular classroom setting. In the visual arts, students engage more directly with challenges and "thinking" questions causing them to generate original ideas and create unique solutions reflected in their art projects. In doing so, they also develop key traits and mindsets essential to career, college, and personal success . These crucial core competencies (a.k.a. studio habits of mind) include but are not limited to inventing, experimenting, risk taking, creating, collaborating, closely observing, communicating, in depth reasoning, decision making, making mistakes, proactively working through "mistakes", evaluating, and practicing patience and perseverance.
My first and foremost goal is to guide students through fun and rigorous art challenges that assist them in becoming better thinkers and learners. In becoming better thinkers and learners, they automatically develop into great artists. I love teaching art because it is such a joy to witness the abundance of creativity and enthusiasm as children participate in exciting, engaging, personalized, choice based art activities! It's incredibly rewarding to see a child beaming with pride and bursting with excitement when they discover or create something new to them.
I look forward this year to collaborating with and guiding my KTEC kiddos as they continue to learn and develop skills in the creative process! ~ Mrs. VanBlarcom
