I am a career changer and have been teaching for about 8 years. I got my Masters from George Mason University and my under-grad from the Corcoran School of Art & Design. My first full year teaching position was with the newest elementary school in my county, Greenville Elementary. I was able to develop my entire program from scratch and taught there for 6 years. I taught pre-school through 5th grade, our population averaged around 500 students. I taught at Greenville's feeder school Auburn Middle for two ye ... read morears and am now at Kettle Run High School teaching Art and Darkroom Photography.
I am also an avid baseball mom to my son who attends Kettle Run!
I wish to inspire students to be passionate about the world around them. I want them to be able to connect the dots and see how art does that. I got into teaching because I enjoyed attending art school and exploring myself through art making and I want students to discover this as well. Through art you can comprehend history and popular culture and you will understand a lot more when you know what visual references are being used. I want students to realize that even if they don’t want to “be an artist when they grow up,” art is still a vital skill needed to succeed. Art is a healthy outlet for stress and a way to express feelings. Georgia O'Keeffe said it best, “I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for.”
Another aspect of the art room is creative decision making skills. Other subjects tend to have ‘right’ answers. I think it is hard for students to have confidence in their decisions because they don’t get to do it often enough. I want my art curriculum to encourage creative thinking and decision making that can carry over into any aspect of their lives. I want my students to question the world.
I want my art curriculum to spark students’ imaginations, develop their technical skills, and encourage them to take risks.
