Yvonne Decordova
Greetings, Art Lovers! My name is Yvonne de Cordova and I am the Elementary Art Teacher at BelovED Community Charter School. If you haven’t heard, I absolutely love my job. It’s wonderful to be part of the B.C.C.S. community. I am originally from Texas and grew up in the Dallas area. My mother and grandmother were seamstresses and artists. I was lucky to have access to the great outdoors and the unlimited supply of materials it offers. Much to my mother’s dismay, I was often dragging home some piec ... read moree of junk I imagined turning into one thing or another. I don’t remember a time I wasn’t creating something. To this day my garage is filled with what I call supplies and my husband calls junk. I always knew art would be a big part of my life. I love taking things no one else wants and making them into a things of beauty. I attended Austin College in Sherman, Tx. from which I received a B.A. in Fine Art with concentrations in ceramics and painting. I moved to N.Y.C. in the 80’s and began working in healthcare teaching art to people with disabilities. In the 90’s I completed a M.A. in Art Therapy and moved on to administrative work and therapeutic practice. In 2009 I began a Masters Degree in Elementary Education. I completed my M.A.T. in 2012. I was hired at BelovEd as one of her founding teachers that same year. This is my Eighth year here at B.C.C.S. and each year is a little better than the last. I design the curriculum to align with both state and national standards. I truly believe in the value of quality art education and will always do my best to present each scholar with a developmentally appropriate, engaging challenge. In art class all children are taught to think creatively, solve problems, and persist through difficult tasks. It is my sincere privilege to support the next generation of innovators, problem solvers, and artists.
