I started taking art classes on Saturdays when I was in elementary school. I was interested in art throughout high school and college. My interest in teaching also came early in my life. After graduate school I worked in a 4th and 3rd grade classroom. Once I had children I wanted to switch gears, work part-time, and luckily I came to my job at Oak Meadow. I started teaching here in 2002. I have loved every minute of it. I enjoy the freedom I have to work with children using a variety of materials. I use a m ... read moreodified TAB (Thinking for Artistic Behavior) approach which means I teach in an open-ended way, giving students short lessons to introduce them to a material, process, artist, or other specific aspect of art-making. I use essential questions to get students to think broadly about art and personal expression. I encourage students to use their ideas and experiences to inspire their work. Students can work at their own pace. I also use Studio Habits of Mind, originally developed at Harvard's Project Zero, when planning lessons and evaluating work. In 2006 I became an art21 Educator. I am part of an on-going collaborative process, working with other teachers to bring contemporary art and ideas into the classroom. My goal is for each child to work to the best of their ability and to find a personal connection to the arts that enriches his or her life.
