I graduated from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, with my B.A. in Studio Arts and my certification in K-12 Art Education. I’m originally from Estes Park, Colorado, where I enjoy hiking, camping, and spending time with family.
My experience in art includes drawing, painting, sculpture, digital art, digital photography, bookmaking, and papermaking. My f ... read moreavorite materials and processes are pencil, charcoal, soft pastel, watercolor, plein air, papermaking, and casting. In the art room, students explore their identities as creators. Made in the image of God, they are endowed to create by the creator of all things! (Genesis 1:27) I desire to provide an experience where students are empowered to share their individual, God-given voice and creative spirit. For this reason, our curriculum is founded on the Teaching Artistic Behavior (TAB) philosophy. The essential principles of TAB are that the child is the artist, the classroom is their studio, and the purpose of art education is to learn how to think and act as an artist. For more information about the TAB philosophy, see: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QKWCXNYNbNlg6Qq1--Jp4SefcKP7mceT/view?usp=drivesdk.
In art class, we will develop technique, practice good stewardship of the materials and space God has blessed us with (Genesis 2:15, Psalm 24:1, Matthew 25:14-30), engage with our interests and the Word (Matthew 4:4, 2 Timothy 3:16), learn to persist when things don’t go according to plan (Philippians 1:6, James 1:12), envision ideas and how to execute them, express meaning and God’s Truth through art (1 Corinthians 10:31, Colossians 3:17), observe the world around us (Psalm 19:1, John 1:3), reflect on our experiences, challenge ourselves to grow (Revelation 21:5), and collaborate with others (1 Corinthians 12:13-27). For more information about our objectives, please check out: https://www.studiothinking.org/the-framework.html.
If you have any questions, need to discuss your child’s progress, or want to volunteer in the art room, please get in touch with me at hbergsten@rcschool.org or ext. 2153. I’m happy to answer any questions you may have!
