Biography
Elizabeth Thomas has been an art educator since 1994. She attended Central Missouri State University and received her Bachelors and Masters of Secondary Art Education degree from Southeast Missouri State University. Her teaching career began at Clinton County School District in Plattsburg, Missouri teaching Elementary and Middle School. With her family back in Cape Girardeau, Elizabeth sought out a teaching position closer to home. Sikeston School District would be her next teaching experience. While there Elizabeth taught art to Kindergarten through fifth grade students. Six years later Elizabeth was encouraged to pursue an opening at Clippard Elementary with Cape Public Schools. For fifteen years Elizabeth taught art to students in most of the schools throughout the district and to all levels from Kindergarten to seniors at Cape Central. Most recently Elizabeth has been teaching at the Scott City School District, both High School and Elementary Art Education.
Teaching art and creating art has opened many doors for Elizabeth. Through teaching she has written and participated in numerous grants, some in the classroom, others as leadership roles and one gave Elizabeth the opportunity to pursue her own interest studying the Skyscrapers and architecture in Chicago. As a professional educator Elizabeth had the occasion to travel to Bolivia with Rotary International investigating their culture, landscape, and history. It was an experience she gladly shared with her students and colleagues. In 2011, Elizabeth was awarded the highest honor by her colleagues that of Missouri Art Educator of the Year. Missouri Art Education Association selects the recipient based on the recommendation of her peers, the candidate’s qualifications, experience, professional organizations and a peer review.
As an artist Elizabeth has participated in numerous art shows, street painting festivals, and art workshops but most importantly has had the good fortune to share this with her husband of thirty two years. While their artwork is unique to each of them, they seem to complement each other. Elizabeth and Craig reside in Cape Girardeau, they have two children and two grandchildren, when not teaching, creating artwork, or managing the Black Door Gallery Air B&B, Elizabeth loves to travel.
