Biography

Mrs. Shumaker is in her 13th year of teaching art for in Plain Local Schools at both Avondale and Middlebranch Elementary Schools.
Before Plain Local, she taught kindergarten and first grade in Arizona, Conotton Valley, and Dover. She left full-time teaching to be a full-time mom for a while, and worked on the side part-time as an art instructor, K-12 tutor and home instruction teacher, community education instructor, and web designer. Before returning to the classroom, she worked for four years at ArtsinStark, the Stark County Arts Council and coordinated their school arts integration grants, programs,and projects throughout the county -- and ran the monthly Canton First Friday art walk events for 3 years too.
Mrs. Shu grew up in Stark County -- and graduated from Kent State University many moons ago. She has a M.A.Ed from the University of Phoenix (the original one - in Phoenix, Arizona).
Mrs. Shumaker is an award-winning professional artist and exhibits regularly in the Canton Arts District and NE Ohio. Her work is featured in two publications, Stark Arthology and Anderson Creative's Annual Catalog. She was awarded the 2019 OAEA East Region Outstanding Art Teacher Award, the 2020 Ohio Art Education Association Elementary Division Art Teacher of the Year for Ohio, and in 2021 received the state-level Art Advocate award for her volunteer work in the community and for helping other art teachers in Ohio with Covid pandemic lessons, resources, and online teacher meet-ups.
