Fancy Dots

Our first unit of the school year is Exploring Materials and Approaches to Artmaking. As part of this unit, we read the story The Dot by Peter Reynolds. It is about trying, especially when you think you can't do something. Afterward, the kindergarteners created dots with many kinds of art supplies (just like the character Vashti) in order to learn about tools we can use in the art room. Our final creations were Fancy Dots, filled with different lines drawn in oil pastel and layered with watercolor paint. Students cut out their dots and placed them in printed frames.
