Papier-mâché is a composite material consisting of paper pieces or pulp, sometimes reinforced with textiles, bound with an adhesive, such as glue, starch, or wallpaper paste. To begin this project we discussed how various forms of papier-mâché has been used throughout history. We also discussed how papier-mâché is used in the modern day (theater, parades, cosplay, etc). The 4th graders used strips of newspaper and Elmer's papier-mâché paste to build their masks. We spent two classes building up the masks, trying to get as many layers as possible. One goal was to overlap the layers in different directions, to ensure a stronger mask. On Day 3, the students painted their masks with a white base coat and then planned out their design in their sketchbooks. On Days 4 & 5, the students used tempera paint to bring their designs to life. Students focused on craftsmanship and creativity during this process.
