Bellwork Collage

The purpose of this unit is to unlock even greater possibilities of self-expression through process art and collage. Students will learn about Pablo Picasso and Romare Bearden and their specific contribution to the collage artform. Students will also watch a video by current Instagram artist and songwriter Brian Huntress who sings about enjoying "art as a process" and features many different mixed media approaches. After drawing inspiration from these artists, students will be tasked to create a collage using any of their previous artworks and worksheets that have bene handed back to them. They are encouraged to cut them up and re-glue them in an interesting way, and may go back in with colored pencil, watercolor or oil pastel to add more pizazz. After finishing this collage, students will conduct a written reflection on their experience and evaluate their finished piece's success. Finally, students will reflect on the question: "I sit better to throw away artwork, or create something new with it?"
