Samantha's tapped into something much larger than art with this piece. The home represents the American dream. While our founding fathers were writing the Declaration of Independence, artists such as John Singleton Copley and Benjamin West were capturing the American dream on canvas as history was being written in real time. Housing is the cornerstone of the American dream and Samantha captured it perfectly. It's decorative, celebratory, and traditional.

Wassily Kandinsky is widely regarded as the father of abstract art. This is a man who lived through 2 world wars, presidential assassination, watched his beloved country turn communist, and broke all the rules in art. He knew how to break the rules because he was a trained and accomplished artist. His education was not just fine arts, but also law and economics. I see that type of controlled rule breaking in Samantha as well. Through trial and error, Samantha is breaking every single rule, and its a beautiful chaotic anarchy on her canvas yet again. This piece is no different, and it shows that she shares the love of abstract art as Kandinsky.

This piece echos of Helen Frankenthaler's "Madame Butterfly". Not so much in context, but in color use and style. This falls into the Color Field Painting style, where a single color or hue is used on the canvas. Emotional, mythic, and religious content is erased through this method, leaving the art to stand on its own legs if you will. It's obvious that Samantha is inspired by European modernism, and I'm glad to see she is developing her own style by looking back to the great abstract arts.

Basquiat's Untitled (Yellow Bone King) has striking similarities with this piece. There's emotion, movement, but the desire to be modern is what sets this apart from Sammi's previous works. There's a subtle art deco theme in that desire to be modern, and that's where the beauty lies. There's more intent than structure. It's distortion, frozen in time.

Sammi has found a way to bring life to this two dimensional scene. Her skillful use of perspective and shading adds emotion and movement to this piece. The colors compliment one another in such a way that is familiar and calming. But the real gift is the focal point. The frog reminds me of Henri Matisse's son in his piano lesson painting. How he's there, but more in spirit than anything. It's sad but also beautiful. The frog might represent her accomplishments, or ours.

Samantha's is showing us her avant garde side. She's channeling abstract nonobjective styles while also playing tribute to the strict byzantine era, which is quite refreshing. This, while ironic, shows her skill level is vastly outpacing our expectations. The way she utilizes chiaroscuro of the baroque period in the background really makes it stand out.

Its obvious that Samantha is taking cues from the greats. I see Basquiat's line drawings mixed with the colors of Franz Marc's Die grossen bluauren Pferde. She's taking advantage of how expressionism allowed artists to express their feelings instead of their technical skills. Most people have to learn the rules to properly break them, but Samantha is breaking rules she probably hasn't even learned yet.
