Hi Lucas, What artist did you study about before you drew this picture of you on the playground? The way your clothes and body have been divided into colorful sections with different patterns looks like you were using your imagination. What fun! When I see your artwork, I wish I could sit in your art class and have Mrs. Wishy teach me too! Love, Grandma Becky

Hi Lucas, The next time you call me, I want you to tell me how you created your angel tree topper. Did you use paper mache? I'm interested in learning how you shaped the cone body and sturdy wings. I remember when Michael made his angel topper. Now all your Christmas trees can have their own special angel. Love, Grandma Becky

Hi Lucas, You did a wonderful job with your self-portrait. Did you choose to wear your football shirt that day on purpose? I can almost see you blinking those long eyelashes and winking at me. You are an artist! Love, Grandma Becky

Hi Lucas, Artist Franz Marc was new to me so I located his website to see what kinds of art he made. I think he would be honored to see children studying his art and creating animal art similar to his. I'll look forward to you telling me more about him and about your artwork. Love, Grandma Becky

Hi Lucas, I'm glad I was able to meet your turtle in "person." I hope you'll be able to mend his leg. I know you've really enjoyed making art in 3rd grade this year and I look forward to making art with you this summer. Love, Grandma Becky

Lucas, Ohhhh, you "painted a picture with scissors" like Henri Matisse. I think you should frame this one for your bedroom. Did Mrs. Wishy tell you that Matisse had assistants that would paint papers the colors he wanted and then he would cut them up to create his masterpiece? It reminds me of the cardinal you created for the frame in our house. Remember how you created the painted papers and torn them up to form the bird? You chose lots of different shapes, big/little, thin/wide, straight/curvy, bright/dark to make your masterpiece stand out. Keep creating! I look forward to seeing what you do next. Love, Grandma Becky

Hi Lucas, Whoa! That was a bright, sparkling sun that you painted. It was fun to watch you create it. You turned your sketch into a beautiful bright collage. Making a collage is SO much fun. Maybe we can make one together next summer when you visit. Love, Grandma Becky

Hi Lucas, This sketch gave you a great beginning for your collage. I recognize many things from Grandpa Gene's and Grandma Phyllis' farm. Your finished collage turned out spectacular. I'm so glad that I got to watch you create parts of it. Love, Grandma Becky

Hi Lucas, love your picture, Grandpa says it look like our farm, you did an awesome job wish it was sunny here today, don't like the snow.

Hi Lucas, You were probably too young to remember that I had a Tiffany-style looking lamp when we lived in the big old home in Neligh. You did a nice job of making brightly colored stained glass pieces in the lampshade and adding the crystal beads dangling around the edge. Did you know that real Tiffany lamps are very, very expensive? You light up my life . . . better than any lamp every could! Love, Grandma

Hi Lucas, When I first saw your photo, it reminded me of all the photographs in the "I Spy" books. I thought you were going to ask me to 'find' a specific object. Are you telling a "Toy Story" with an exciting scene at the Police Station? My favorite area at the station is where all the people are together visiting on the roof. With the pandemic going on, I miss being together with friends and especially YOU! Love, Grandma

Hi Lucas, You are great at making mirrored letters and I can tell those Zentangle shapes took you a long time to create. Next time we get together, I should bring along my Zentangle book for you to look through. You can ask Mom to show you my Pinterest page with a board filled with Zentangle ideas. Some of them will amaze you! You could hang this on the closet in the bathroom and be able to read your name the right way while you are brushing your teeth! Love, Grandma

Hi Lucas, It looks like you have been studying Native American symbols painted on buckskin. Did you think about you and Michael as brothers when you wrote the story? We will have to look for a real one of these when we visit a Native American museum.

Hi Lucas, It looks like you want to have some fun playing hockey. You and Michael could play hockey wearing your rollerblades. You did a nice job of drawing your action figures and posing their bodies. I can almost hear the puck sliding across the ice!

Hi Lucas, Your weaving is so colorful it brightens my day just like your perky personality! It takes a long time to weave those strips of paper up and down and up and down through all the wavy slots you created. I see the word HAPPY on the paper. I bet you felt "HAPPY, HaPpY, happy" when you wove the final strip! Love, Grandma

Hi Lucas, It looks like you went on a scavenger hunt for primary and secondary colors. What's next? Tertiary colors?

Wow, there is so much to see in this picture, you make us think with all the colors different sections of print, it must of taken you a long time to do this, Good work!!!

Hi Lucas, Wonderful drawing, just a way of showing us what Christmas means to us. Love you Grandma Phyllis

Hi Lucas, I'm glad you showed me your actual Christmas tree that I see here online. You have gotten to create so many pieces of artwork on a variety of materials. Mrs. Wishy makes sure her students have rich experiences using "mixed media" so you can choose your favorites. Have fun creating! Love, Grandma Becky

Hi Lucas, What a lovely tree. At first, I thought it was a Christmas tree filled with lights and ornaments. Then, I wondered if it's a tree loaded with pinecones? You made good use of your complementary colors which makes your tree POP against the background. Did you enjoy the grit of the sandpaper as you applied the waxy crayons? Keep creating and having fun.

Hi Lucas, Did you draw a picture of yourself with your handsome brother? I looked up the artwork done by Mary Cassatt. I didn't recognize her name but I did recognize her art. You are lucky that Mrs. Wishy has you study such great artists and appreciate their work. This one is a keeper! Love, Grandma Becky

Hi Lucas, I can see from your painting that you have been studying the American flag. If I asked you how many stripes there are and why there are that many stripes, I bet you would be able to tell me. Do you know what the red and white colors stand for? You did a very nice job of painting your flag. It's not easy to do. Be proud! Love, Grandma Becky

Hi Lucas, This piece of artwork has a lot of different techniques included - the woven strip background, line work around the edges, and collage with fabric. I will look forward to having you tell me about the characters you created. Miriam Schapiro is an artist that I did not know. I located her work on the internet to see how it influenced the work you created. I'm looking forward to making more artwork with you this summer. Love, Grandma Becky

Hi Lucas, It looks like you had a lot of fun exploring different colors and shapes in your painting. Did you use different size brushes? What did you use to make the lines? Did you find out what happens when you put another color on top of wet paint and dry paint? Painting is so much fun. I can't wait to visit with you and have you tell me what you learned about painting like the artist Wassily Kandinsky. Love, Grandma Becky

Hi Lucas, Your Mexican tin art project has such bright, vibrant colors. What did you use to emboss on the tin? You are such a lucky boy to have so many different art experiences. Love, Grandma Becky

Hi Lucas, I see you have been studying the artist, Jean Miro, so I looked up his artwork to see the kind of art he creates. Your "Turtle Singing in the Garbage Can" drawing is surreal. Is your little turtle named Tiny Tim? Did he swallow soap and somehow end up in the garbage can? Did he swallow anything else while he was in there? I think there could be an entire story to write about your special turtle. Let's talk about it the next time we FaceTime. Happy Creating! Love, Grandma Becky

Hi Lucas, Wow! I can tell you really listened and learned about lots of types of lines. I see wavy lines, straight lines, loopy lines, zigzag lines, curvy lines, bouncy lines, thick lines, thin lines, and dotted lines. I'm looking forward to seeing how you use what you've learned in future drawings. Have fun making more art! Love, Grandma Becky
