It looks like a cold winter night in the woods. I Love it!

Merry Christmas! This picture is a great example of anticipation. The decorations are waiting for their big moment - probably wondering if they will be on the tree, on a wreath, or maybe some garland... Your evergreen branches look so realistic. The shadowing is nice throughout the whole thing. I really like your hangers, too! I hope your Christmas is wonderful and full of goodness, both given and received.

Gobble, gobble...this turkey is awesome. I love it! It is very simple but so impactful. Trying to imagine if you had inverted the cool and warm spaces: I’m pretty sure it would not have come close to this. The way you made your strokes in different directions really gives texture and adds so much interest to the overall work. Your positioning is perfect, also. Really great job. Thanks for sharing.

Nice shape of the skull. Interesting that while both sides have the same minimal components, they are not identical in size and position. Very realistic for us humans that aren’t perfectly symmetrical!! “Dirtying” him up a bit is appropriate. Can’t help but notice —- he has all his teeth still very much in tact. Surprised to see you doing this assignment again - you did this same one in first grade. I do like it, though. I like how you separated the inner area from the outside rings. I makes it look like two separate items in the picture. Also, I love that you used the color wheel but with a huge spin on it! It took me a minute to realize you had all the colors because of the way they are mixed!! Good job on making the viewer think about the work. Thanks for sharing.

I love the ability you give me to imagine the ice cream flavors! The last one reminds me of my prickly pear cactus in bloom - remember when your dad took a bite?! Giving the board a live edge look really makes it look real. Like that you didn’t make each cone equal in scoops. They look like they are leaning, which makes it feel like they are truly starting to melt. My favorite thing, though — the cones! I love the shadowy effect that lets me know how the light is hitting on them, and I like that they are the same but different! Best of all, it brings a vivid olfactory memory to mind. Years(and years...) ago, a new connivence store/ gas station opened somewhere in the area across from Sonic. For some odd reason, which I thought was way too fancy pants for a place like that, they made waffle cones in the store!!! Oh my, what a wonderful experience to open that door and be inundated by that aroma. Every time I see waffle cones, I get a flashback of that store and the smell! Hmmm, maybe they knew what they were doing!! Thanks for sharing.

This looks so awesome honey! It looks good enough to eat! You're making your baby brother crave some ice cream! I see that you have some of your favorites. The ice cream cones look awesome as well. There's a lot of detail that went into this piece of artwork. I love you honey great job!

Happy Heart! Glimpse at the picture and it could be a simple heart. Look closer and find lots of details making the overall product. Three colors seem perfect, and the fact that they aren’t traditional colors associated with a heart, especially near Feb. 14, really makes it unique. The heart has a 3D look because of the pressure you used on the crayon and that you used the same color as the line it was in that kept the pattern going - love that! It reminds me of when I used to make macaroni art!! I find the shape of your lines especially awesome. Your use of straight and curved lines perfectly fits the location within or outside of the heart. All straight or all equally curved would not have produced such a great look!! Coloring with strokes that go from side to side gives the picture a pleasant and easy to look at element. It also stresses how wide your heart is - - more room for love!!! Another enjoyable piece of art - thanks for sharing.

Oh, I’ve never seen this artwork. It looks nice. I love the abstractness of the Christmas tree inside the border. You have arranged all the necessary parts in a wonderful way. It has everything it needs to be a legit Christmas tree and nothing extra. I would love to have this tree at my house. Looks like it might be an ornament. Hope you hang it on your tree year after year and remember your 3rd grade year in art class. Thanks for the peek!

You do “windy” better than anyone I’ve ever known!! I feel like I’m in a freezing wind storm when I look at your picture. The colors are perfect and the swirls let me know that there is ice in the air. Ha! Love the bluebird on his nose. Best thing about it is, you made him almost invisible. I really had to study your painting up close to see him. The snowman looks happy to be out playing. It’s the perfect day for him. He has his hat and scarf, so he’s all set for a fun-filled day. He’s going to be my happy, frolicking snowman!! I love the picture. Thanks for sharing it with us. Brrrr.

Wow, your yellow bird in the tree is exactly like something I can see from my kitchen! I have a hillside of aloe that have yellow blossoms on tall spikes. Every year, starting in early spring, there are yellow birds - exactly the same color as the blossoms - that swarm the aloes. It’s really beautiful, and sometimes I find myself just standing there staring. They rest in the branches of the macadamia trees that grow in front of them - just like your picture! Oh, and after the yellow birds leave, there are tons of hummingbirds that take their place. (Can hardly wait to show you.....)

You’ve modernized the elf! It’s about time he got an update. Can you believe that I had an elf when I was young? Bet you didn’t know he was that old! Like your shading in the background. It kind of follows the outline of his body and make him stand out more. I really like the colors you picked for him. He can be an elf for all seasons now. He won’t have to hide in the box in the attic and wait for someone to come along and pull him out to plop him on a shelf. Even the ears got an update! Instead of being the largest thing on his body, they are now small and cute, but they have the exact shape of elf ears. His hair looks good nicely tucked under the hat. The hat — love that part of it is not in the picture. What’s going on with the end of it? Did it get cut off? Is a mischievous elf tugging on it? Is it blowing in the wind? Something to think about. His face is so cute and I love his mouth! Also, you made the button holes!!! Terrific attention to detail!! I’m sure this cute little elf must be holding a surprise behind his back —- hmmm, might be something for you! I know you are thinking that you didn’t draw anything behind his back, right? Elves are magical... Thanks for sharing.

Oh, how cute. Huge surprise when I opened the new artwork to find a giraffe at this time of year! My very first thought was that it reminded me of a book my mother used to read to me when I was young. The name of the giraffe in the book was Jasper. We both loved that book and she read it so sweetly. Thank you for letting me enjoy a wonderful memory for a minute. When I look at him, I feel like he is looking back and wanting me to scoop him off the page so he can visit with me and Sukoshimotomo! I really like how he is symmetrical, as a whole, but yet each side has its own characteristics. The darker yellow at the center of his head gives a nice depth to the picture. You really made some great eyes...like I said, I’m pretty sure he is looking at me! If either one of us could sew, we would most certainly have to make him into a stuffed animal!!! Love him - thanks for sharing.

Edward Degas said, “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” With that in mind, I’ll say that I am pretty sure that if I came to your school, I would not recognize your teacher. What I do see in this art, though, is a boy and his teacher who look very happy and very content to be in each other’s company. I see a teacher who cares for her student and is very willing to keep him safe. I see a student who is comfortable and seems to be glad to be at school. I see it’s a beautiful day on a nice campus. What I see in this art makes me happy and makes me feel good that you are there with people that you trust and make you feel good about yourself. Thank you for sharing this with me. Oh, and I really, really love the texture on the building...looks like tons of tiny bricks!!!

Hello, Mr. Monster! Are you a friendly sort? Maybe you are a huge, mean monster... The size of the drawing relative to the paper lets me use my imagination to turn Mr. Monster into whatever I wish him to be! I like that. When I first glance at him, I see those big red eyes and that automatically makes me think he’s mean. Next, I notice the color of his body, and that reminds me of Cookie Monster, so I think he is a nice monster! Then, you really made it difficult for me to decide by the way you made his mouth. Are those sharp, pointy teeth waiting to much down on my arm, or is that a mouth that has been thoughtfully stitched into a forever smile, left there just to make me feel happy? Hmmm, well today is a beautiful day and I am enjoying it very much - I’m going with Mr. Friendly Monster...hope you are having a similar day and finding yourself surrounded by lots of friendly ones!! Thanks for sharing your work.

Freneticism at it’s finest! Love how you captured movement in the picture simply by the angle of your lines. I can feel the speed of this star, and you have actually made me believe that if I blink my eyes and look again, it will be gone from my sight! Your use of warm colors was the absolute must choice for this work, as was the black background which puts the focus entirely on the star. Limiting the number of colors allows for the orange to become the central energy spot - I feel like everything radiates from the orange. By making the orange sections different sizes, you have made it appear that the energy is growing and the speed is increasing. Next time I see a star whizzing by, I’ll surely think of you. Breaking news out of Fayette County.... Little Stalk is harvesting the sun to light up the fields. Cotton farmers across the mid-south have been looking for ways to light their cotton fields, enabling them to harvest later into the night. Thanks to the inquisitive mind of Little Stalk, it has become a reality. He has found a way to harvest the sun so farmers can harvest the cotton! Through his secret experiments, he now can use the sun to power some of the cotton stalks and bolls turning them into solar lamps... stalks used as the base and bolls used as lightbulbs... all powered by the sun!! Although he won’t reveal how he does it, he does say he will be happy to put this to use in any fields where it is needed. He set up an example today in a local field and Carson Sullivan was there to capture the monment. Thank you Little Stalk for helping farmers continue to add to their technology. How I see it... the red side shows you feel protected — the green side shows you have room for exploration and the mix of the two at the bottom holding up your hand shows you are firmly rooted and happy where you are. The bracelet leads me to believe you have friends that you admire. My wish for this hand is that it will always be confident enough to work by itself, that it will always be wise enough to know when to reach out for another hand when it needs guidance, and that it will always be kind enough to grab the hand that is reaching out to it for help. I love this hand - always...

Oh, thanks for the flowers!! I first notice that you made the inside of the vase a differnent color, and I can now tell exactly the shape of the vase and how far down the stems go. Like your choice of the zig-zag pattern on the vase which gives a nice opposition to the roundness of the flowers. The brown and green background extends the nature theme - nice touch! I love that each flower in your bouquet is a different flower, a different color and a different size! It’s exactly like the bouquet that Cool Mike just gave me!!! Also, I like that you kept a limited color palette because it lets me focus of the individual items but see the whole picture without confusing me! Like these flowers...

Nice work on the border and the corners. I like the “sameness but difference” you worked in with them. The hand is very interesting. You made the palm all in one pattern and then let each finger have its own pattern. I like that. The palm holds all the fingers together and the fingers each have a special role in the task they are performing. Work together but do your own job and the task gets finished timely and correctly!!! Oh, and when I look at the wrist... it looks very strong and stable, which is what is needed! Good job on this. Makes me smile!

Bunny time! I love, love, love to have a good old fashioned egg hunt - but only if I am the one hunting!! You’ve got these eggs balanced perfectly. They are counting on each other to keep themselves in place! Having a subtle background keeps the focus on the stars of the piece, and I like how the mottled grass reminds me of a freshly mown lawn ready to host an egg hunt. Your limited color choice is a good way to show how many different looks you can get just by the way you apply the colors on each egg. The red and orange dots on the light colored egg remind me of jelly beans! What would Easter be without jelly beans?! I hope the bunny that is going to deliver these special eggs hops his way over to my house. Thanks for the Easter prep - time to start thinking about decorating my own eggs! Hop - hop - hop...

Aren’t hearts the most wonderful things ever? They do so much work for us and give us so many emotions - plus, they are totally fun to draw!!! In the best way possible - I can’t tell what your animal is.... which makes this art awesome. It is nicely composed and still very intriguing at the same time. I can conjure up so many narratives depending upon which animal I pick it to be!! Gives my imagination a thrill. Dog? Cat? Raccoon? My choice is an owl!! I picked owl because the trees, so beautifully done in the background, lead me to think an owl is a perfect focal point. The scene looks like the front area of my house! We have so many macadamia trees there, usually have a blue sky, and have bare earth - a perfect match! Even more perfect is the rabbit at the edge of the work!!! (Tons of rabbits out here - they eat everything...) As for the owl - every evening and every morning, we have several owls around the property that talk and talk and talk to each other. Thrills me to know they are there proctecting us -and hopefully, getting nice and full!! So, now you can see why I want your heart animal to be an owl. Thanks for letting me share my little story inspired by your art. Oh, and I hope your rabbit keeping right on hopping until he disappears from the picture!!!

I really like the ornament. You did a very nice job of making it feel like Christmas. Red and green are still my favorite Christmas colors. When I was young, most all the Christmas decorations were red and green. Seeing them reminds me of fun times from my past. Hope brunch for the grandparents was fun - I wish I had been there. Like the shoreline - it puts me in the frame of mind to see a duck on the water! I get the feeling of movement from the directions of the blue crayon marks. The grass and cattails on the shore make it seem like there is a slight breeze. The duck is a nice fat species and has good coloration for blending into the surroundings! He looks like he has been down this same path many, many times! I say this beacause when I look closely at his eyes, he looks like he is a little bored!! I’m thinking he is a loud quacker because of his wonderful beak being open very wide. Since he is a duck, he will continue to do his duck things - swimming and quacking, even if he finds it monotonous at times! He is handsome, and I really like him a lot. I’d like to think he has a friend up ahead a bit that he is going to see... Let the fun begin!! Thanks for sharing.

It’s cold. The wind is blowing. The snowman is being tormented. He just wants to get his head finished so he can get his eyes, nose and mouth adjusted and put a black hat on top of it! This is totally relatable. When you are building a snowman while it’s still snowing, you just have to go with the flow! I appreciated how you were able to make it so realistic and let me get the feeling of the wind blowing everything around just by the way you placed your bits of paper. Also, like how the facial features look too large for his head right now, but they will be the perfect size once his head is complete. You really used your thinking skills to make an awesome picture. Thanks for the enjoyment!

Glad to see your work again! Looks like you nailed a freaked out Rudolph!! I believe he is thinking - You want me to do what??? Do you see how windy and cold it is? My scarf is blowing out straight from my body, my antlers are bending in the wind and my ears are FREEZING... Must be foggy, though - the red glow from his nose is definitely coloring the fog red!!! Just in time for the bunny to scoop it up and bring to my house. I love to have an egg hunt on Easter, and your colorful egg would make it even more fun for me. Having the thicker streaks of color in the foreground of the egg immediately draws my eye to the piece. Then, my attention goes to the background. I like the repeating colors and the different angles of the lines in the background. The lines going across at the bottom give it a sense of spinning. Very nice egg, indeed! Happy Easter!

Really like the animation you put into the cat’s facial features! He has a nice coat of fur and some great whiskers. You also did a wonderful job of expressing the long, lean body of Mr. Cat. I like the use of the light and dark and the different directions of strokes. It gives each heart its own attitude and purpose. There is a multitude of emotion found in this one piece of art work. The best thing, for me, was the top left heart - another one of those “not sure if you did this intentionally moments.” The heavy dark orange area - - it looks exactly like a fork! Since Mr. Dine was known to include meaningful implements into his art work AND his last name is “Dine,” the fork is a perfect way to honor him in your art. If not intentional, what a wonderful stroke of luck!! Another great work from you.

I love so many things about this piece of art. Using the purple gives it an extra dose of coldness. The purple, combined with the markings in the sky, makes me assume it is icy. The use of the darker patch at the front of the picture and the “path” in the middle draws my eye up to the totally white snowman. THE SNOWMAN!! He is awesome. Lots of praise for making him a unique shape. I feel as though he just magically rose up from the snow! He is still so grounded in the snowfall; yet, he is standing tall and proud. Maybe he isn’t through growing?? He has a happy face, and he looks like he wants to start moving all around in the snow! Love that you put the lines in the hat - gives it dimension. Also, the outline you put on his side going up to his hat... Looks like the snowman’s side and the brim of his hat, but it also looks like a broom. Hmm, perfect placement to make one think! So much to look at and think about from your latest art piece!! Thanks for sharing.

You have great texture on the tree! Really like how it seems a limb has been removed and the cut has healed on the right side of the trunk. Also, the limb the cardinal is standing on has a nice jagged end. It looks like limbs on some of my trees! You placed the bird in the front, making me notice him first - but my eye is drawn to the background and the falling snow. It all looks so peaceful. It makes me think of how much I enjoy the silence when the snow is falling, and now I know that the birds enjoy it as much as I do!

I think Max is one handsome dog! He is a one-of-a-kind dog with so many unique features. He looks very happy with his tail wagging and his tounge out with a smile on his face! I am so glad that you gave him a wonderful house with his name on it near his “peeps” house. That must be one of the reasons for his smile!

Good job on the ducks! I like how they each have their own look but can enjoy the pond together. Your markings in the water give it a nice swirling appearance. Also, I really like that you drew each duck’s body looking like it would from the direction we see it, and that you left the feet under the water!!

This picture gives me a new way of thinking about reindeer. I have always put a sleigh with my reindeer thoughts! I’ve never considered they may have their own favorite things of the holiday. I like how you have put the reindeer off center at the bottom. It leaves room for his holiday thoughts to be the main focus of the picture! Great that you gave each ornament a different design and a color that goes with Christmas. From now on, when I see a reindeer, I’ll be wondering what he is picturing in his mind!

Great use of the traditional “Halloween colors!” I love that you let the jack-o-lantern be the star of the show and the trick-or-treaters act as a background filler. It gives an immediate focus on the time of year without adding in a lot of unneccessary objects. Good job!

Carson, I really like your choice of colors for the autumn leaves! You bring out the soft colors that are usually overlooked. Looking at your artwork allows my hands to feel the texture of the leaves, my eyes to see the colors of the leaves, my ears to hear the crunch of the leaves, and best of all - my nose to smell the scent of the leaves! Carson, I love your cat! The way you painted the background gives him a 3D look. Your use of shading and outlining reallys draws my eye in from the background to the cat. By changing directions with your black crayon, you gave texture to his fur. The awesome tail and eyes you gave your cat make him so unique. I notice all the dots are similar but different. I like the way the colors from one dot tie in to the colors from the other ones, but that each one is unique. The backgrounds are different, which gives a different mood to each dot. You did a great job of using a simple dot and giving it so much variety. Each person can have a different experience from looking at your dots - that's what art should do. Great job!
