Gianna, this is another beautiful project, a fabulous piece to add to your portfolio! Your lanterns are gorgeous; each so unique, they complement each other nicely, and your night sky couldn't be prettier. Your attention to detail with color and shading is most impressive--and those stars! (I'm gazing at them in search of constellations...) As always, your assignments have allowed (encouraged!) me to learn more about a particular artist, movement, place, or cultural tradition. I've enjoyed learning about Ramadan and these beautiful decorative/symbolic lanterns today, too! xo

Gianna, this is beautiful! I think this is my favorite of all the pieces from your 5th grade collection. It reminds me of some place in Arizona! Well done! Love, MOM

I love this nighttime artwork! I can't wait to display the original in our house. Where should we hang it? -- Love, Mom

Wow, Gianna; this is great work, and what a fun assignment! I LOVE your Banksy robot and your positive message, too. (Yes, let's do our best; we CAN do many things and do them well!) Your robot is fabulous...I can tell you did YOUR best to create it--the "bend" in its arms and legs, the detail on the body, and that great facial expression.(And is that a little heart I see on its mouth?) The background texture, your lettering in fun colors; it's perfect, G. (As a side note, I hadn't ever heard of Banksy, so I'm catching up and have learned a lot today. What an interesting story/history! Do you think Banksy is a "he," a "she," or a "they"? There are many theories...)

Your sloth is adorable, Gianna, with great shading and texturing on those l-o-n-g arms and legs...and look at that cute face! His little nose and mouth are the sweetest, and I love his eyes! Will he hold pencils and pens on your desk? (This would also be a nice candy dish!) Will you name him?

I recognize van Gogh's work in your own "starry night" creation, Gianna! It's fun to see his techniques and night sky come to life in your modern Kansas City skyline. I also like the uneven lines of your windows and buildings...there is such beauty in imperfection. You've done a wonderful job with this assignment!

Another fun assignment, Gianna! I like your Haring-inspired self-portrait! I see your love of reading and books ("Wings of Fire," specifically), sweet little Eclipse, you playing soccer! I see a bird, a tree, the sun. Is that you with Hayden, or with a friend, maybe, in the top left corner? Nice choice of colors, and I like the squiggles! Do you enjoy pop art? Did you have fun with this project?

Gianna, grandpa had to look up what the words meant. Now it seems they mean to honor the dead for 2 days. Very nice embroidery pieces that could be used to place on markers of the deceased. Very nice work!

Gianna, you have decorated the most beautiful of donuts. Grandpa thinks you should market these in a local donut shop! They are beautiful and I'm sure delicious!
Posted 3 years ago by Grandpa Frank
These donuts...they're perfect and they look sooo good, Gianna! I can tell that you took a lot of time and paid close attention to detail in creating this. I like the off-center placement of your subject, fun "frosting" colors, the way you've decorated them, and your skilled use of outlining and shading, too. Very nice...and yum! (Save one for me, will you?)

Excellent recreation of "The Scream," Gianna! I like your version... the river, the railing/bridge, your hands up to your face...your expression! Beautiful job, too, on the detail and texture you've created by simply using line to create your dress and hair. This is wonderful!

What a fun assignment! Gianna, yours is surely a slice of deep dish cheese pizza, yes? It looks tasty! (And kudos to your teacher for teaching you how to stitch/sew! It's a practical and valuble skill worth mastering...)

GIANNA, this piece of art is just really good! You really did a great job of showing a picture of a girl Screaming. You are becoming an art expert drawer!

Oh, those ice skaters...they look like they're having fun! (You and Hayden, maybe?) I can imagine their fancy footwork shown by the trails in the ice that they leave behind. Your winter cityscape is beautifully done, Gianna, and I am intrigued by the technique you used to illustrate the bright light of the city reflecting from behind each building. Very nice work!

Calico corn, indeed! Wow, Gianna; your creation is colorful, detailed, and oh, so beautiful! You drew many interesting shapes for the kernels, selected nice colors, and shaded them nicely. The detailed corn silk is just as striking; the lines create such interesting texture. This piece is worthy of a nice frame and deserves to be hung for all to enjoy. It's gorgeous!

Gianna! What a beautiful "quilt drawing." It looks like you're flying over the Missouri River and downtown Parkville, perhaps? This is nicely drawn with lovely colors and detail. Did you enjoy Tar Beach? It's a beautiful thing to believe we can fly and go wherever we want, isn't it?
Posted 4 years ago by Gram C.
A Picasso portrait! This is clever, Gianna--just like Picasso himself. I have to study it a bit...every time I look at it, I think I see another face, from a different angle. I can tell you must have paid very close attention during this lesson and worked hard to create it! You've captured Picasso's style beautifully!

Gianna, this is a very interesting piece! I like your colorful window shades and choice of furnishings. You've also selected pretty colors for the walls. Is this an apartment you would like to live in some day? It looks very cozy! (Can I come for a visit? I will bring you cookies...)

Gianna, this is stunning! The colors used for (and the shading of) the sky are gorgeous, and the silhouette of the scenery (in black) is striking. And your little crow? Just adorable! What a beautiful job you've done...from his feather "markings," to the nare on his beak, to the pupil (or reflection) in his eye. Detail makes all the difference. I think this is one of your best pieces yet!

I like your swimming pool and the "bird's eye view" of it, Gianna! The various colors within the water create a feeling of reflection, and you've used line to create interesting and attractive texture surrounding the pool (concrete, tile) and motion within it (I see waves!). Very nice detail and depth to this drawing, G!

I think these horses must surely be the happiest and most colorful horses I have ever seen, Gianna! Just looking at your drawing makes me smile...you've done a beautiful job in choosing color and in drawing it. (Have you read "The Artist Who Painted A Blue Horse" by Eric Carle? It's a wonderful book, and I think you would like it!)

Nice campsite, Gianna! What were you studying, what was your assignment for this masterpiece? I see a tent, a campfire, and the night sky--and it looks like you used chalk, crayon, paint, and collage. I can tell you worked hard to create it! I like your color choices, too.

What an adorable deer, G.! The antlers are striking, I like the shading/coloring on the face, and the "technique" you used to create (form) the eyes. I'm always intrigued by your backgrounds and borders, too. Some of your paintings remind me of early Maud Lewis folk art--happy and beautiful.
