Love your use of perspective here, Alissa! It really does look like you name is popping out from the page. Love you, Mom

Hey Sweet Alissa!! Cedar Rapids Granny here! Love the perspective! It's fun, isn't it!!! Grandpa is heavily into perspective and always was extremely careful to have his perspective correct on every painting or pen and ink drawing he did. He's a little phobic on the subject. I figured that if it looked pretty good, that was right on the mark for me. You might want to get into a discussion with him about his ideas on the matter. Personally, I would rather play "Pokey People" with you and Zach or be creative in the sprinkler during the hot summer time months. You are an extraordinary granddaughter with sooooo many talents! Great perspective - Great young lady!! Love you bunches and miss you so very much!! Grandma M

Wow, Alissa, that's really cool! I wouldn't want to meet that mask in a dark alley because I'd probably have to scream or something. It reminds me of two clay guys I molded when I was about your age. They both sat on my parent's fireplace mantel for probably over 30 years. Yours is much more colorful and can be hung on a wall. Or maybe you'll wear it some time? Did you have anyone in mind when you made it? Kind of reminds me of a ceremonial or warrior mask of some kind. Pretty neat! Love, Grandma Marcia

Alissa, Wow! Another striking work of art! Before I even looked at the written description of this one, I just wanted to react to the feeling I was getting from it. I know when I first saw it, I just said, "Wow" and thought it reminded me of a rainbow vortex. Then when I read how you'd accomplished this using your warm and cool colors woven together, I thought, "Yah, it's a woven rainbow." Wouldn't it be pretty to see something like that stretching across the sky? Of course, God does pretty good work himself, so we'll leave real world rainbows to him. I think it must be quite fun for you to be using all these various methods of creating artwork. Very clever and absorbing, I should think. Thanks for sharing! Love, Grandma M.

Alissa, I KNEW that was you in the picture, even before I read about it! Good job! Portraits are really extremely difficult to do, especially self portraits. I used to enjoy doing people I knew . . . like Grandpa Jack!! But, it was sometimes easier to draw him from pictures than real life. I think there was just one time I came fairly close to capturing him and that was a side view while he was just sitting and didn't know I was sketching him. Side views seem to be less problematic because the eyes aren't as tricky. Eye expressions take lots of practice, I think. Have fun and continue to do what you enjoy! Love and hugs, Grandma Marcia

Dear Alissa, I decided to comment on your artwork separately. I really love your landscape - the colors in the water just gently drift through complementary shades, just like the water itself. I don't know how you used glue initially, but I suspect it was for a textured base. It must be something to see, because it's already very pleasing as a copy. That's one reason why it's really quite amazing to see original works of art displayed. There's so much more to it than a person can see in a copy. Aunt Carol, Grandpa and I so enjoyed our trip to the C.R. Art Museum in April. We were able to view so many original works that Grant Wood did and it gave all of us a much greater appreciation of not only his work, but also of the man behind the work. Excellent exhibit, and one that I wish you would be able to see too. Grant Wood was the artist that painted Great Grandpa Pete when he (Grandpa) was about 14 years old. That particular picture wasn't in this exhibit because it's privately owned. We have a copy of the Grant Wood picture, but it doesn't do it justice, I'm sure. Viewing original artwork is always so much better than seeing the copy. I'm so happy you are able to share your artwork in this way, because I feel I'm a part of what you're doing. I look forward to seeing more! Love, Grandma Marcia

Dear Alissa, Thank you for your letter regarding your first art piece. It really clarified things for me. You did well with what I thought was a difficult assignment! I'm so happy our cable is finally up and running again so I could view your latest two pieces. When I saw your still life (guitar) I couldn't help but think of Uncle David and how much he would love this one. He still plays his guitar a lot and is really quite good. I'll have him look at this after work today. You did a beautiful job depicting the movement of music as well, which is pretty difficult to do. I could feel the hard beat from the peaks on the left, the melody on the right and the vibration in the neck area. Whenever I watch and listen to Dave play, what I hear is all there in your picture. What a great likeness of the guitar too. Very well done!

Alissa, I'm trying to figure out how you did this -- chalk on black paper? However you did it, it's beautiful. The colors are very rich, and it has a lot of texture. I can't wait to see it in person!

Alissa, Thank you for letting me view your first piece of art! It's very vibrant and I can tell you put a lot of work into it. I just wish I could see it and get a better, larger view and ask you questions about the ideas you are expressing in it. I'd also ask you about the materials you used. I have a feeling that seeing it in person, I would get a much better understanding. I'd love to have you tell me your thoughts. The comment below your picture says that students "literally bridged the gap between communities." What "communities" are involved here? I always have appreciated your art projects and art work and I hope you just keep doing more of what you love and sharing them with me. You are talented in so many areas, and I'm so proud of you. Love, Grandma
