I really like your color choices, the blues transitioning into the purpled. The silhouette of the tree looks very dramatic against the colors.

Oh Avynlee, I'll bet you can imagine how much I love this since you know I love cats! I learned a lot about Laurel Burch. So talented but she never took an art class. And she died so young--age 61.

Avynlee, I love your Dream House! The blue curtains in the windows look great with the turquoise exterior. It looks like there are bushes with either flowers or berries on each side of the house. And your home is situated on a beautiful wooded lot. My favorite thing is the circular window above the front door.

Avynlee, I had never heard of Jacob Lawrence, so your painting inspired me to learn about him. I learned that he lived from 1917 – 2000, which means he lived to 83 years old and he painted until just a few weeks before his death. He was one of the first African American artists to be represented by a major commercial gallery. I like your painting—it reminds me of our deck in the backyard.

I have always loved Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night. It's one of my favorite! I learned this about the artist. In just over a decade he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of them in the last two years of his life. He never knew how famous he was because he didn't become famous until after he died.

Avynlee, I like your Chinese Dragon. I have two Chinese Dragons at my house, which I would love to show you someday. One is a gold dragon with little mirrors for scales. And the other one is a black ceramic dragon that I'm pretty sure your Mom made.

Avynlee, I love your picture of the Great Wall of China. I learned that it was originally built more than 2,300 years ago. 25,000 Watchtowers were built along the Great Wall. Each tower had three stories. The first and second floors were used as living quarters for the soldiers and storage rooms for grain and fuel.

Avynlee, I love your “Realistic Self-Portrait”. It certainly is very realistic! I was wondering if you looked in a mirror while working on this project.

The Terracotta army is so fascinating! And to think that it was created about 210 BC and then not discovered until 1974! (I was about 21 years old at that time.) The terracotta army figures were manufactured in workshops using local materials. Heads, arms, legs, and torsos were created separately and then assembled by luting the pieces together. When completed, the terracotta figures were placed in the pits in precise military formation according to rank and duty.

Avynlee, your “Ancient Egyptian Boat” project made me interested in learning more about the subject. So I learned that early Egyptians learned to make small boats out of the papyrus plant. Eventually the Egyptians began to make boats from wood, using acacia wood and cedar wood. They also began to use a giant sail in the middle of the boat so they could catch the wind when heading upstream. Your boat is the perfect example of the wooden boats they made.

Avynlee, I really like your artwork here. I learned something about the Great Sphinx-- The Sphinx was carved from the bedrock of the Giza plateau, a single ridge of limestone. And it is considered to be one of the largest single-stone statues in the world.

"Wow!" That's what I said when I saw this one. (I said it out loud!) It's so beautiful! So then I did some research and learned that Ma’at is also known as the mythological goddess of justice and truth. Her teachings can be compared to the conscience of a person. It’s reasonable to say that Ma’at’s teachings aided the people of Egypt into being good people.

Avynlee, I love your artwork "King Tut Funerary Mask". In fact, this is one of my favorites! I printed off a copy on my color printer and put it in the three-ring binder where I have been keeping your artwork.

Avynlee, you must be learning so many interesting things in First Grade. I like this picture very much. Maybe you will tell me more about it next time I see you.

Avynlee, Machu Picchu sounds like a very interesting place to visit someday. Did you know: Machu Picchu was only known locally until Hiram Bingham re-discovered it in 1911

Avynlee, I am enjoying your painting very much. I love the sunshine and the stars and the flowers. It reminds me of going for walks in my neighborhood. I am starting to see flowers coming up all over the place!

Ooohh...looks like we are studying a new painter! Wassily Kandinsky was born in December of 1866 in Moscow, Russia, although his family was comprised of German aristocrats. He was considered as the influential pioneer of abstract art. "Soft Hard", a geometric abstraction, was painted in 1927 as an oil on canvas.

Franz Marc really does love animals, doesn't he? I noticed he painted this one in 1912 when he was 32 years old. And you painted your picture in 2018 when you are 6 years old.

Avynlee, Wow, that is one happy cow! I was reading up on Marc Franz and it said he has a February birthday, like you (February 8, 1880 actually). Of course he is no longer alive, having died in 1916. So he lived only 36 years.

Avynlee, I enjoyed your "Large Blue Horses" by Franz Marc. I learned that it was an oil painting on canvas that Franz created in 1911 and that it was purchased by our Walker Art Center here in Minneapolis in 1942. I really like the way you drew the long neck and face of the horse in the front.

Avynlee, was I excited to see your artwork posted again. I learned that Frida painted this self-portrait in 1940. It is an oil on canvas painting, measuring 24 inches by 18 inches. There is so much wildlife in the picture—butterflies, a bird, a monkey, a black panther, dragonflies. I really like the monkey in YOUR artwork.

I love your artwork "Frida Kahlo Self-Portrait with Monkey". When I was a little girl I wanted to have a pet monkey. I have learned that Frida was married to another Mexican artist and that she did some of her paintings while a patient in the hospital after a terrible bus accident.

Avynlee, I absolutely LOVE your picture of Frida Kahlo's Self-Portrait with Bonito. I did some research so I could learn about the 1941 painting. Frida must have been very sad when she painted her self-portrait. You did an awesome job on Bonito. Bonito reminds me of my green and yellow Parakeet Woodstock.
