How wonderful to see another surprising way of creating art--by sewing. Kaiya, I love your creation using needle and thread, buttons, plastic snowflakes, and pieces of color fabrics to make a portrait of a very cute dog. You are amazing! Well done!

Kaiya, your artwork featuring a bubble bee in its hive is simply gorgeous. Your rendition of the face suggests a worker bee going about her business of building cells when she is startled by a human being observing her closely through a magnifying glass. You have a nice contrast of colors ranging from bright strong yellow and black for her body, light blue for her wings, to the light yellow and white for the cells. And you do all this using the Procreate creative app--something I wish that I could have used when I was a kid. Very commendable!

Kaiya, you have done a great job on your depiction of this signature street art of Greg Mike, “ Larry Loudmouf.” I am impressed that you did not miss the significant chipped tooth, and the important use of black and white, key factors in this piece. I am not surprised by the choice of your favorite color purple for the frame, against that ivory background. It complements the pink tongue, your other favorite color! Those two black and white eyes express something very vital and important ! I would say the voice from this “ loud mouth” has quite a lot to say! Congrats! I am very proud of you!
- Joetta ( granny) on February 19, 2020
Kaiya, you've captured the style of Greg Mike very nicely, even to the chipped tooth. I like your color selections--purple border against a very light grey background, exaggerated white teeth against black (suggesting perhaps the depth of a loud mouth to shout from), and smaller teeth before a pink tongue. And of course, the black-and-white eyes give us viewers freedom to come up with our own interpretation of what your Larry Loudmouf might be shouting.Very whimsical!

Kaiya, your Jen Aranyl-inspired mountain scape is very commendable in several ways: First, your black background effectively centers our attention on the main topic of your art--the wintry landscape. Second, the white spaces are ideal for representing snow covering the landscape and the mountains. Third, your black lines are clean and strong, representing the winding road, the foothill boundary, the mountain contours, and the trees. And fourth, your water colors provide a beautiful balance to the white and black dimensions of your art. Congratulations, Kaiya, on an art work that's well done.

Kaiya, I like your figure drawing using manikins to illustrate the straight parts and bendy parts of a person. I observed that you have mostly used the bendy parts of the shoulders and hips. They remind me of Chinese soldiers warming up before an important march, or even ballet dancers performing! You have definitely demonstrated that you have grasped the trick of drawing a person, using straight and curvy parts. Congrats my budding artist ! I am very proud of you!
- Joetta ( granny) on December 6, 2019

Kaiya, I think you have done an amazing job in your figure drawing of the hand. I can clearly see the eight irregularly shaped carpal bones of the wrist, the five metacarpal bones of the middle of the hand, and the fourteen phalanges of the five fingers, each finger having three bones, except the thumb that has two bones. You have aced it in your use of colors, and in using black to define the outline of each bone, and each joint in the hand. In your figure drawing you have shown the straight parts in the bones of the hand, and the bendy parts at the joints. It is clear that you know the anatomy that is beneath the skin of the hand, an important point in drawing a part of the human body. Marvelous work my little artist ! I cannot resist mentioning that the gold and rust colors you used, remind me of a beautiful sunset on the gulf of Florida’s west coast! I can see both of us relaxing on the beach with a glass of cold lemonade ! I am so proud of you my budding artist ! I think Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo would be proud of you too! Kaiya, I have never heard of the artist, Alexander Calder! After viewing his work, I have come to the conclusion that he had to be one of the world’s most gifted artists ! I was just mesmerized as I viewed his work in action! Nothing less than genius! What imagination and creativity! He created all these sculptures from metal, wires, wood, corks, bottle caps, & so many other useful objects to create his circus performers, and by the use of springs and pulleys, they literally came to life like a butterfly in flight, or a ballet dancer twirling in the air! Such balance and precision! I think your depiction of the artist’s work shows your creativity in action! I am very proud of your effort in this art project, “ Alexander Calder’s wire circus performers.” I think you have captured the art skill and creativity of using wires to create an art form that could be set in motion. Congrats my little artist ! Joetta (granny)
- Joetta ( granny) on December 4, 2019
Hi Kaiya. On YouTube I watched the Alexander Calder Wire Circus on which your art work is based, and I am amazed at the creative things that you can use wires to make and do. Your photo shows only a portion of your complete wire structure, but it appears that it might include movement and action in line with your circus theme. If so, it certainly can be called performing art. It also shows me that using wires could certainly be one of the many aspects of your art portfolio in your development as a multi-media artist if you were to pursue that as a hobby or career. Well done, Kaiya!

Kaiya, your monochromatic self-portrait captures the characteristics that I have seen in you: the wide-open eyes reflect your bright, eager, curious, and lively personality; the upturned smile reflects your happy, easy-going attitude; the heart-shaped lips reveal your loving nature; the choice of purple as your monochrome is the intermediate color between blue and red, a balance that suggests that you have an even, balanced nature. It's also a color of rarity, royalty, and piety, all features that I see reflected in your personality. Your self-portrait is a true reflection of you...someone of true beauty and a dear granddaughter.
- Grandpa Derrick on November 15, 2019

Kaiya, you did a great job capturing the metacarpal bones in your drawing, so much so that the image looks like a sepia-tone X-Ray of the hand. Your use of black for the outline of the hand against shades of reddish brown reminds me of the Aboriginal art of Australia where the rest of our family lives. I hope that someday you'll have the opportunity to visit them in Melbourne.

Kaiya, your mannequins capture dance movements very nicely, giving a sense of fluid movements. I like the whimsical imagery that is simple, joyful, and fun. A delight.

Kaiya, this is a very fascinating piece of art! A portrait of you, with a single eye! It provokes me to think that you have appropriately placed this single eye on the face as a focus point! This brings attention to the subject, “ How you see yourself “ and “How others see you.” I read the words you have written to describe perhaps how you see yourself, or perhaps how others see you. I chose a few that I think accurately describes you ! > You are kind, sweet, smart, lots of fun, love your family, I see you have the names of your parents, and siblings written next to yours, you attend a Christian School, and I know you love the Lord, you are funny, full of love, joy, and peace, your favorite restaurant is Samurai, you like to sing pop music, and you enjoy dancing, you like pizza, your favorite toys are Kaola & Panda, favorite color is pink, you are a Gator fan, and the list goes on and on! I totally agree with all that you have written, except one comment! I do not believe you are lazy! Quite the contrary! I think you are always willing to help others, and that you are very caring and compassionate. I think you have a heart of love, and that your light shines brightly for Jesus ! I think that is the best of all! Great job on your art piece, my amazing artist ! Joetta ( granny)

How creative, imaginative, and thought-provoking! Kaiya, you are really multi-faceted! I think that we should all follow your example and use art to express how we see ourselves.

Hi Kaiya. Your cupcake is so realistic that it made me hungry for one. The marshmallows on top remind me of that evening when we all sat by the campfire in your backyard and roasted marshmallows during our last visit to your home. The variety of art projects you have completed show your impressive training and skills, and I am truly sorry that we live so far away and are unable to experience them in person. We're proud of you and are thankful for all the artistic experiences that you are having in school.

Kaiya, I am definitely a cupcake girl, and I know you are too! Your contribution to the world of art is original and refreshing! I am not only impressed by your presentation of a Thiebaud inspired cupcake, but I am ready to take a sumptuous bite! Yummy!!! I like the colors, the green paper cup, red frosting, topped with slightly dripping chocolate, marshmallows, and a couple of crunchy chips ! All so realistic! You have really made it your own! Would be a great addition to the Christmas table! Maybe we could make those very cupcakes and eat them all up! I think that is a great idea! Maybe NOT?! We have to SHARE ! Great job, Kaiya! I am very proud of your dessert! Sorry, I meant art piece!

KAIYA, you have done a fine job in the use of lines, circles and dots, to display a very pretty name! I like the soft colors you have chosen, very much like your own personality, soft and sweet, yet you are able to pack quite a punch ! More like a gentle giant ! The name Kaiya is of Japanese origin, and means “ Forgiveness.” A very important attribute in the life of a Christian! I pray that your Christian walk will be marked by forgiveness always ! Great job, I am very proud of you !

I would love to have this art piece framed on my wall, or on my iPhone case! The various shapes & mix of lovely colors, deep and light, convey sunrise & sunshine, life, activity, tempered by the coolness of the blue ocean on a breezy Spring day! I absolutely love it ! My immediate response is, “ DELIGHTFUL!” Kaiya, your “thinking cap” translates beautifully in this art piece. Your choice of colors, use of lines, straight and curved, by the use of scissors on painted paper is quite impressive! Your “paper cut out “ on the work of Henri Matisse, gets a “thumbs up “ from me! You have sure made Granny super proud, my little artist!

Kaiya, I am really drawn to your “Kandinsky inspired concentric circles.” My imagination is awakened & many beautiful memories are rekindled, when I view this square on the left with that circle of vivid shades of blue and aqua, surrounded by green, against a black background. This reminds me of Neptune, that bright azure blue planet in the Universe that is dark, windy, and cold! It also reminds me of my trip to Hawaii > the beautiful, deep blue ocean, and the green palm trees surrounding the resort! The color palette to the right evokes feelings of warmth & excitement! I can envision a beautiful sunset on the west coast of Florida on a warm Summer evening, with a cold glass of lemonade! Delightful! Even reminds me of a bowl of delectable berries! Yum! The colors are so robust and as they intermingle, they seem to create new colors, and express a sense of boldness, and independence ! Expressed from a very original artist, Kaiya, who is not afraid to jump out of the box, and exercise her individual creativity! I can see the reds mixing with blue in a circular fashion, creating that beautiful magenta, & there is such a wonderful array and interaction of other warm colors! I see rust, purple, orange, yellow, gold, black, olive green, grey, brown, white, pink, among other subtle hues of almost recognizable colors! You managed to mix colors that work well together, and the energy of your art conveys life & movement!

Wow, Kaiya! I'm so blown away with this artwork--so many colors and forms within forms, with various clusters each occupying an area in their "universe," for together they remind me of stars, planets, and galaxies spread way beyond our night sky. For me, the square in the center symbolizes the earth with its myriad nations and peoples, and our place in God's vast cosmos. Thank you, Kaiya, for this inspirational creation.

Kaiya, I'm so pleased to see that you are experimenting with ways to see how colors go together, for that is such an important skill in becoming an artist and designer--whether it's painting a scene or object, decorating a room or house, choosing the clothes to wear, and so many other aspects of living. So often I see a color, and suddenly it reminds me vividly of something of my childhood many years ago, and for a moment that color brings back long-forgotten memories and emotions. So, dear Kaiya, continue to explore and experiment with your concentric circles, for they are part of your journey in discovering who you are as an artist.

Kaiya, I am quite impressed with the variety of textures you have managed to create in your art piece, depicting “actual texture & visual texture “! I see smooth surfaces, indicating a smooth texture, and I see what appears to be rough surfaces, indicating a rough texture. Both textures may actually feel as they appear to the touch, the “actual texture” or may be contrary to how they appear visually, creating a “ visual or implied” texture.” It is interesting how you have used lines > horizontal, vertical, diagonal, curly, straight, curved, zigzag, thick, thin, spiral, to create so many patterns and designs in your art piece. I see squares, rectangular shapes, circles, spheres, dots, peaks, meandering waves, cubes, scallops, and other pretty and interesting designs. The center square tile seems to convey most of the rougher textures. I am reminded of so many things, when I view this piece> I thought of the Pyramids of Giza, the beautiful Rocky Mountains, the stars and planets in the universe, the waves of the ocean, yarn, bubbles under the ocean, electrical cables, ice trays, waffles, tiles, a metal wall, fence, or gate, a lovely trivet for my kitchen, cake decoration design, fabric for a pretty dress, or skirt. The list goes on & on! I have really enjoyed this beautiful piece, Kaiya! Thank you for sharing !

Kaiya, I like your representation of a beetle in the Coleopterist’s beetle collection. You have done a great job in defining the body parts of the insect > the head > with strong mouth parts, two eyes, and 2 antennae; the thorax, with 6 legs, showing the thighs, shins, and clawed feet; and abdomen. I see the wings are at rest, and the elytra casing of the wings have very interesting markings and designs. I think you have put great thought and effort in your beetle from the “ Coleopterist's Beetle Collection!” Congrats, Kaiya! Well done! I think Sir Joseph Banks Coleoptera would welcome your beetle in his collection!

A beautiful beetle art work, Kaiya. I'm so impressed with your use of pastel colors in the background and on the body of the beetle, along with tiny colored gems, multicolored strips, and legs made with wires. And I learned a new word--"coleopterist," one who studies beetles. Grandpa learned something new today, thanks to you, Kaiya.

Kaiya, Your Winter light/ Winter landscape is colorful and bold. I like the rolling hills, I see a church to the left, and other buildings among the hills and valley. Your beautiful golden sun in the sky to the left, has joined forces with the earth’s atmosphere to create such a marvelous event! The glow from this amazing activity has erupted into an array of vibrant colors! In your depiction of these beautiful colors, you appear to have them engaged in a dance as they twirl in your glowing Winter sky! I see red, shades of pink, shades of blue, purple, yellow, and orange!. Your effort in combining art and science in this project is awesome! Great job, Kaiya!

Beetles are such interesting creatures! It is amazing to know that 25% of earth’s animal species are beetles! I am not sure which variety you have chosen to sketch, but I am very impressed with the detailing on the sketches you have drawn. You have the basic features of the insect > head, first segment of the thorax, in one sketch, and 2 segments in the other, & the remaining part of the thorax, and abdomen are covered by the elytra. I can see the head with 2 eyes, mouth, and 2 antennae. The beetle uses its antennae to smell, and to feel out its surroundings. The chewing and biting mouth parts of the beetle are not only for eating, but are well-developed and serve to capture prey, as well as defend them against predators. I also see the 6 legs of the beetle, with the thigh, shin, and feet clearly defined, and attached to the thorax. There may even be claws present on your sketch. Very good job! I noticed that your sketch to the right has furry legs, and the shape of that beetle reminds me of a weevil beetle. The hind wings attached to the thorax, are not visible, but are obviously at rest tucked under the protective fore wings on top. I think you have captured the features of the beetle! Great job, my precious artist! I am very proud of you!

Kaiya, You did a fabulous job on your Winter tree collage! I like your color choices, and design, incorporating different shapes and lines in your art piece. You have done a great job cutting and pasting to create these beautiful Winter trees! The cone shaped ones seem to represent pine trees decked in red and green, and all ready for the Christmas Season ! The one on the left reminds me of a red traffic light. The small one on the right with the red polka dots, looks like a pine tree decorated with red lights and covered with snow. They are all lovely and creative. I am happy that you included a typical tree in Winter that has lost all its leaves! Very sharp thinking my little artist ! Another lovely work of art! Congrats !

Kaiya, your vertical, broad & black, geometric linear art form could portray a piece of metal, wood, or other material used to construct a building, bridge, fence, deck, furniture, or numerous other useful objects. It expresses stability, strength, structure, and purpose ! Lines and shapes are so important in the creative process of art. The use of lines can greatly influence how your art is perceived. It directs the eye, in the interpretation of the art piece. Thanks for your representation of “Ellsworth Kelly Lines & Shapes.” Great work, my little artist !

Kaiya, your horizontal broad & black geometric linear art form could represent a piece of wood or other material used to construct a building or a bridge. It denotes stability, strength, and structure. It helps us understand the importance of lines in creation of effective and beautiful art work. How you use lines can greatly define how your art is perceived. It directs the eye, and can even create movement . This piece brings out feelings of strength and stability. Thanks for your depiction of “Ellsworth Kelly Lines & Shapes.” Very well done!

Kaiya, your little ceramic nature house belongs in a children’s book, or in a little English garden ! It is so PRETTY! I love the coral roof with beige design at the top ! For a moment I thought it may be a chimney with smoke coming out! The light reflection on the roof is so realistic! The texture of the walls and base of the house, in addition to the mixture of colors you used, give the house a very rustic appearance. That coral/ purple/ pink combination goes really well together! Three of my favorite colors ! Reminds me of sponge painting. I noticed you made an arched OPEN doorway in white with patches of pretty colors. An open door to all the little creatures that need shelter! This attests to your kind and giving nature, always trying to help others in need! The two dark stones in front add a nice touch to the decor, and may provide great seating for all the little creatures that stop by! May even be used to close the opening of the doorway! That reminds me of Our Lord Jesus’ body in the tomb! On the third day, the Stone was rolled away! He is RISEN !!! Praise God! I can even imagine a little squirrel seated there eating a pine nut! The green grass and plants offer shade and beauty. Your little nature house gave granny much food for thought! Thank you, Kaiya for a sweet little piece of art work that makes me smile!

Kaiya, your rendition of the “pop art “ artist, Burton Morris, is vibrant and colorful, and shows your independence in stepping out of the box! I like that you have made it your own style with that blue heart! Originality shows your strength and confidence as an accomplished artist! The serrated orange cut out behind the heart and black background make it POP! The white cut outs on the heart indicate to me that this is a beating heart! It shows life! At the top of the heart, it appears that you have accentuated this by adding white cut outs of blood vessels entering and leaving the heart! This indicates blood flow, and life, a great representation of Burton Morris’ work, which is full of energy, and bringing inanimate objects to life! Excellent job, Kaiya! A very well “thought out” and executed piece of art! I am very impressed!

This fascinating “ Royal Blue Lady” has such piercing and mysterious eyes! She certainly knows something that I don’t know! I wonder if the matching blue handwriting in the background holds the clue to that expression on her face! I like her light blue hair at the nape of her neck. It frames her elongated face, long nose, bushy black eyebrows, and no nonsense mouth perfectly! One thing I know, this lady is not about to take NO for an answer! If she is a teacher, make sure your homework is DONE!

I love your depiction of “ Nature house sketches.” The house reminds me of a ginger bread house. You have effectively used simple lines, squiggles, and circles to create this lovely framed art piece of your nature and house sketches. I see a neighboring house. I guess that is where your best friend lives. I see trees, flowers, plants and other objects of interest in your nature landscape. There is a puddle with a “ Splash,” and a note that indicates your best friends, and that your dog is a Pomeranian ! You have all of this inside a beautiful frame, designed with lines and circles, all ready to be hung on your wall! Nicely done, Kaiya! An interesting piece!

I found a family member’s diamond ring in one of my Keurig coffee boxes! A perfect example of an expected object in an unexpected place! Your Sandy Skoglund black and white inspiration piece, with framed art pictures, is very interesting, creative and funny! Great use of line patterns and shading. Kaiya, your “ Still life” bowl of fruits is so delectable ! Again you have succeeded in making that bowl have the illusion of standing upright on a flat surface! The fruits are so colorful and enticing, it is difficult for me to choose one! Kaiya, I am impressed with your “charcoal still life“ art! You have managed to capture the look of glass, that is amazing! Not an easy feat! Great shape, symmetry, and quality to the pitcher and glass. Your use of lines, shading, & shadowing, and use of light, medium, and dark tones, achieved the look of a glass pitcher and glass standing on a flat surface! I can clearly see the light falling across those 2 objects! Well done, Kaiya! Kaiya, your three landscapes remind me of 3 windows, where I can view morning, noon, & night! At the top window, I can see the sun peeping ever so gently over the horizon, above the tree tops, as the darkness begins to fade. It makes me wonder, what will the new day bring? The hustle and bustle of life is about to be rekindled as the new dawn slithers over the horizon! Another day has dawned! The second window reminds me of a bright sunny day, with blue skies, and a land with green vegetation, and water ! I imagine birds chirping in the trees, and everyone attending to their affairs, as they endeavor to accomplish another day’s work. In the third window the sun appears to have set, and the stillness of the night is emerging. A time to reflect on a day’s work well done, or perhaps on what has not been done ! A time to welcome sweet rest! Kaiya, Your abstract landscapes have given me great food for thought ! I love it!

Gorgeous piece of art, Kaiya! Simply stunning! You have captured the beauty, colors, and motion of the green sea turtle so beautifully! I enjoy your artwork & talent! So realistic ! Your love for nature is clearly revealed in your art work. What a treat ! This brings to mind the tiny baby hatchling you and your brothers found on the beach when we visited the island of Barbados. It is amazing that a sea creature weighing not more than an ounce, can navigate its way to the big ocean, swim for days to find feeding grounds, survive all predators, and grow to maturity, to continue the cycle of life all over again! Especially since they grow so slowly! Awe - inspiring! Thank you Kaiya, my little artist, for another masterpiece !

I love the way you have used your own designs, color patterns, and line patterns to bring this piece together ! The colors are so vibrant and well coordinated! Kaiya, I am impressed by your use of lines and patterns to create this black and white landscape depicting farm fields and farm houses, inspired by the artist, Heather Galler. Your attention to detail is admirable, as demonstrated by that weather vane on top of the farmhouse to the right, and a chimney on the one to the left with smoke coming out. Kaiya, your rendition of a green turtle swimming in the ocean is so realistic that I can imagine swimming alongside it in the tropical waters off Australia's Great Barrier Reef, Bermuda, Jamaica, Hawaii, or Baja California. I love how you've captured the effervescent bubbles stirred up by the movement of its arms and legs, the vivid green of the turtle, and the various shades of deep to very light purple of the water. Magnificent!

Kaiya, I don’t know if you meant to depict sunrise, daytime, and sunset in your three landscapes but that’s what I see so clearly. Emotion is something that every artist is trying to get from the viewer and you have certainly succeeded with me. Different times of the day, the light created by the sun’s position in the sky give me different feelings. The sunrise and early morning light give me a sense of freshness and possibility; the bright sunshine of daytime, activity and creativity; the dimming light of sunset give a sense of accomplishment and rest and even a little sadness that the day is done. You have created each of those emotions in me with this remarkable work. Thank you Kaiya for touching my heart. Love, Grandma Diana

Great job giving the bottle and glass dimension and shape, which is the hardest thing to do on a flat piece of paper. Your shadowing and shading make them become 3-dimensional so they pop off the paper. Excellent Kaiya!! Love you!! Love, Grandma Diana

A very beautiful trio of landscapes, Kaiya, framed dramatically with wide borders in a vertical unit. The top landscape colors are vivid and strong, so much like the breathtaking sunsets that tell of a day well spent and the approaching night that offers welcoming rest. The middle landscape gives that soft, dreamy-like feel of waking up in the outdoors to view the rising sun coming over the tree tops of a distant forest. This is a reminder of spending retreats and vacations in some of my favorite locations of natural beauty. And the bottom landscape reminds me of a night scene where the the dark forms of trees are silhouetted against the night sky, creating mysterious figures that play with our imaginations. Well-done, Kaiya! Congratulations!

Kaiya, this is a lovely black-on-white rendering of your theme "Expected objects in unexpected places." It reminds me of how often I misplace things such as keys and then find them in the most unexpected places. You expanded my knowledge of art by introducing me to the works of Sandy Skoglund. Thank you.

A very charming ceramic nature house, Kaiya. It looks as if it would be ideal for somewhere in your garden where little gnomes might inhabit. I am so pleased that you're learning a wide variety of art during your third grade year. Great work, honey.

The girl in blue with the Mona Lisa smile. I wonder what she’s thinking? Did she write the messages behind her? Mmmmm. Intriguing. I like it!!! Great job Kaiya! Granada Diana

A very prominent and strong blue lady, Kaiya! I like your use of the blue script in the background, lettering that is partially blocked by the center figure of the elongated face, piercing eyes, elongated nose to match her full face, and her closed lips--perhaps to indicate that this is a woman that lets her written words speak for her! And, of course, she has a straight, closer cropped hair style in lighter blue that frames the deeper blue of her face. By the way, you also have instilled a sense of mystery in this portrait, for you leave me wondering about what she was writing!!

Kaiya you created a great “pop heart” every bit as dynamic as those done by Burton Morris. It really pops off the page with your bold colors and white accents to give it dimension. Well done!! Love Grandma Diana

Great choice in time for Valentine's Day, Kaiya. Your bold colors, especially the amber against a black background, suggest a powerfully beating heart, full of vitality; and your choice of blue for the heart is certainly different and a welcome change from the traditional red. It must have been fun cutting up colored cardboards and pasting them to create your art in the style of Burton Morris. Once again, Kaiya, you've come up with lovely artwork.

Kaiya, your interpretation of Joan Miro’s constellations with stars, spaceships, and space beings, shows that you are willing to bring your own ideas to the piece, and to allow your imagination to be expressed visually. Your display of color adds life and brightness, and you always manage to splash some color in your art pieces! You have such a knack of coordinating colors, an important asset to an artist ! Great piece! Love it !

Kaiya, your Andy Warhol inspired Gelli Plate prints are quite lovely! I like your artistic technique, with the line formations on the star shaped prints. Each star has its own design and color, and background accentuating the piece. I am sure the plates will be beautiful ! Great job!

Kaiya, you have done an amazing job on your Andy Warhol flower prints! I love your choice and use of such beautiful and vibrant colors . The flower to the top right looks like a poinsettia, and really pops with the green background. It reminds me of Christmas. That bright magenta flower with the green and brown background is simply beautiful ! I think it is the star of the frame! The orange flower with the red background is just lovely! The flower at the bottom right has the appearance of leaves with veins spread throughout, accentuated by the bright emerald green background. I can see you put a lot of effort in creating these prints! A very pretty frame completes the piece beautifully! Well done my little artist ! I think Andy Warhol would be very impressed with your work!

Before seeing this artwork of your, Kaiya, I knew nothing of Joan Miro's Constellations--his series of paintings using shapes of stars, birds, and women. You have captured his style nicely, for I can see your whimsical rendition not only using stars and faces, but also using some of your own clever shapes that represent the constellations--creatures from outer space, including a four-legged space woman! I like them!

Kaiya, I must say this piece puzzled me. At first glance, it reminded me of a pair of eyeglasses, and even the wheels of a bicycle! I think your choice of structure represents "Ellsworth Kelly Lines & Shapes" very well, with the vertical and horizontal lines, and circular forms. The background has the appearance of concrete, and the art form could possibly be one section of a wrought iron divider screen, or even part of a gate. I particularly like the heavy charcoal black defining the outline of the structure. Thanks for sharing another great piece of art !

Kaiya, this is such an adorable photo of you! I love your sunglass reflection, it is very pretty and artistic ! You appear to be gazing into outer space on a bright sunny day! You are certainly exploring many avenues of the artistic world, and it gives me great pleasure to watch you expand your wings on this artistic journey! Hi Kaiya, I'm glad to see that photography is part of your art class. "Reflections" is a great theme and you have chosen a very appropriate way to set up your theme--a pair of sunglasses that emphasize and demonstrate something that is reflected. Even if we did not know the theme of the photo, our eyes automatically focus on the images in the sunglasses and we try to figure out what is being reflected--windows on a building?...or on a school bus?--and even when we wonder whether that is a boy or girl in the photo, our eyes cannot help but return to the reflections in the sunglasses. Very good job in using your camera to capture your theme, Kaiya!

Once again, Kaiya, I am just so impressed with the variety of art work that you produce. I love this combination of rich colors--dark blue and green, with a mixture of pale blue and white. I've been showing your collection to my friends in choir, especially to the teachers.

Kaiya, you have used vertical lines, circles, and color to create a very lovely "botanical" tissue paper collage. The bright yellow on the right reminds me of a sunshiny day in the heart of Summer, and the warm orange and brown colors on the left take me to harvest time in the Fall, with leaves of different hues.My imagination takes me to bright orange pumpkins and yellow corn, and the fragrance of pumpkin pies baking in the oven! Quite amazing ! Great choice of colors. The octagon flowers are interesting. I think that is the unique Kaiya factor! Your Hundertwasser tissue paper collage is a huge success! Congratulations my little artist !

Kaiya, I'm so impressed with all that you're learning in your art classes. Your art pieces are way beyond anything that I did in my art classes when I was growing up, and I certainly did not know anything about the Cyanotype photographic process or how it could be used to create art. You did a beautiful job. Well done, honey. Love, Grandpa Derrick

Kaiya, I think the art of cyanotypes is very fascinating. The botanist, Anna Atkins' cyanotypes are quite intriguing. She was able to use this process , discovered by Sir John Herschel, to capture details of plant life, and at the same time produce a special and beautiful art form. I particularly like the blue color tones that the cyanotype produces. Kaiya, your inspired creation of Anna Atkins' botanical cyanotypes is simply beautiful ! I like the placement of the fern and the way you have arranged the leaves on the paper. The detail of the fern fronds, and the outline of the leaves against that beautiful blue background is just lovely ! A very pretty art form! Congratulations, on your cyanotype creation ! Thanks for taking me with you on this beautiful journey. Exploring the world of art with you has opened my eyes to a whole new world ! I am so very proud of all your efforts to learn and to develop your creativity! Keep up the amazing work!

Kaiya, I am impressed with your effort in creating an art piece inspired by Mondrian abstract trees ! You have captured the use of horizontal and vertical lines and color in creating this beautiful piece of art! I love the color purple, and the way you have created emphasis with the deep purple of the trunk and branches, and a light whisper of purple in the shadows, accentuating its definition and beauty! Everything working together in harmony to make it happen! The color purple is regal in a heavenly sense, and this inspired piece is just heavenly ! I totally love it ! Congratulations, my precious artist !

Kaiya, you have done a great job in capturing the Celtic designs that were carved into the rocks of the Newgrange passage tomb. I have a feeling that your art depicts the large rock that sits at the entrance to a passage, when you approach the tomb. Can you guess how I know this? This rock is not only beautifully carved with Celtic designs but is known to have the only Celtic "triple spiral" motif design ever found! Your triple spiral stands out beautifully! That is how I know! I knew you would not miss that detail! One of the spirals had the appearance of a face, and I noticed you have put your own stamp on it! I think the Neolithic people who constructed the Newgrange tomb, and the person responsible for the beautiful carvings on the stones, would be very proud of your art! Great work, Kaiya! I am very proud of you !

Kaiya, you have produced a very nice rendition of the abstract Neolithic rock art found in the Newgrange Tomb, including such symbols as spirals, dot-in-circles, parallel lines, and of course, the rising sun on the winter solstice. It's amazing that such abstract art was created around 3200 BC, even before the pyramids of Egypt. I'm looking forward to more of your wonderful art during the rest of the school year.

Kaiya, this is such a vibrant, colorful depiction of a starry night. It reminds me of the opening words of Don McClean's song, "Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)": Starry, starry night Paint your palette blue and gray Look out on a summer's day With eyes that know the darkness in my soul (ask mom to let you see the rest of the verses, which refer to Vincent Van Gogh and his painting of the starry night) But even more important, your art work of the starry night reminds me of Psalm 19:1-6. Look that up in your Bible. Kaiya, I have thoroughly enjoyed receiving your many works of art throughout this year. Thank you for sharing them with Diana and me. We love you.

Kaiya, how great it is that you used octopus ink to color your art work! I am impressed that you have captured the large head, the huge eye, and those important suction cups on the arms of the octopus. I like how you accentuated the suction cups in black against the gray arms. and the black defined outline. Very well done ! I learnt a few interesting things about the octopus! That large head helps the octopus to propel itself while it swims. The huge eyes are also vital because the octopus is deaf , and depends on its eyes to spot other predators. Those suction cups on the arms are a great help in seizing prey for food. It is fascinating to know that the octopus has 3 hearts, 9 brains, 8 arms , blue blood, and is the most intelligent sea creature! It's ability to defend itself from other predators is amazing! You have done a wonderful job in describing this sea creature through your art. Congrats ! I am proud of you!

Kaiya, your abstract art is terrific! It expresses a sense of boldness, both in color and form. It is vibrant and expressive, yet somewhat mysterious, and chaotic! You sure "interpreted color through music ," in connecting the dots between this piece of art and your love of music! It reminds me of the Sub-Saharan region of Africa with the mysterious drums. I see "variety" in the different colors of your art, each color bringing to the piece its own purpose and presence. It represents the artist Wassily Kandinsky, who recognized and appreciated the importance of "variety" as part of his art. I think you have captured this essence in your art piece, in both the variety of colors, and the part they each play in bringing this abstract art to life. Thanks for exposing us to the world of art, we are learning and enjoying this adventure with you ! You are truly a gifted artist! I would like to frame this piece and hang it on my wall! It is priceless! Thank you, Kaiya.

When I was a little girl, Walt Disney made a movie of Jules Verne's book "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea". In the movie there is a giant squid that attacks the submarine the Nautilus. Then at Disneyland, they made a "ride", really an exhibit, where you could see the squid from the movie attacking the Nautilus up close!! It really made an impression on me and it was always a favorite ride of mine. That's the first thing I thought of when I saw your great octopus!! I love him!! But he isn't menacing like the squid was in the movie. Instead he's simply beautiful with his gracefully curving tentacles and the details you created on his head and arms. Wonderful, Kaiya!! It's one of my favorites!

Kaiya, you have an amazing ability to capture the style of different artists!! This is another wonderful work of art. I love the powerful use of color contrasting with the black outlines. You are an incredible artist!! Love, your California Grannie

Thank you, Kaiya, for once more using your art to teach me something new. I was not familiar with Wassily Kandinsky and his style of music-influenced art, so I looked him up on the Internet and learned a great deal. Your use of vibrant colors and swirling bold black lines captures his abstract style, and I mused about the music you might have been listening to as you created your artwork. As I gaze at your art, it helps me hear again and envision the rapid-fire, rhythmic beating of congo-drums by many a musician playing Latin or Calypso music from the Caribbean islands of my childhood and teens years. Precious memories! Thank you again, Kaiya.

The things I learn from your artwork!! Kaiya, I knew that an octopus could squirt a black liquid to defend itself if it senses danger, but I didn't know that its black liquid could be used as ink to produce beautiful artwork like yours. Your octopus is gorgeously drawn, with its strong, black outlines, dark gray body and tentacles, and large eye, all set against a clear background, producing a great contrast. Very lovely!

Kaiya, I love your interpretation of Vincent Van Gogh's Sunflower. You have captured the bright golden intensity of the sunflower. They are vivacious and heart warming! I noticed that they all seem to flow together. I thought that was interesting. I like the fact that you added your own artistic touch to the original art form. That shows your individuality and strength as an artist. The splash of beautiful bright colors with the green leaves, purple, different hues of blue, and small pink flowers, add interest, and your own individuality to the piece. Your beautiful personality just shines through in your art work! The white vase reminds me of the White Cliffs of Dover, with its chalky appearance and flint - like streaks! Kaiya, I have been staring at your latest art work and really appreciate how you used the different shades of green to give viewers a sense of depth of field--the darker green leaves appearing to be closer to the viewer than the lighter shades of green leaves in the background. Your careful outlines of the veins within the leaves remind me of my kindergarten class when my teacher taught me to observe the leaves in the garden and draw the shapes of the leaves and the network of veins running through them. Your art always seem to remind me of parts of my life while growing up. Thank you for your gift of art. I love you, honey.

Kaiya, you have really brought the jungle to life! I like your use of the varying shades of green in the foliage, and the different shapes of the leaves. This adds definition, structure, interest, and beauty to the piece. The leaves to the right remind me of a cactus plant. I really enjoy the detailed work here, especially the way you have accentuated the veins in the leaves, reminding us that veins serve a very important function in plant life, just as they do in animal life, transporting nutrients through the plant. Great job, my talented artist! I am very proud of you!

Kaiya, I really appreciate the thought you put into this piece. Three buildings identified by their own unique faces, and shapes! The pumpkin on the left with the stem for a chimney is just brilliant! The building in the middle reminds me of a brown paper bag with a cut out for a chimney! I love it! His face is the most expressive! Fantastic! I love the idea of using a red heart for the lips on the building to the right, and just drawing that line across to separate the lips! Very neat! I think that really shows how artistic you are, and adds a special dimension to the peace! I interpret the eyes to be the windows. The colors are bright and cheerful! Well done! Ahhh, this is such a peaceful country scene. When Grandma Diana and I go on long road trips, we drive through some beautiful countryside where we see farms like you have pictured here. Someday we would like to drive from Los Angeles to Florida just to see the beauty of America like you have pictured here. Thank you, Kaiya, for this gorgeous scene.

Great use of contrasting colors, Kaiya. It reminds me of Brer Anansi, the cunning spider of Jamaican and African folklore. It also reminds me of Aboriginal art from Australia where your great grandmother, Terry, lives.

A great art work that is sure to symbolize something different for each viewer. I see it as a party celebration that shows a colorfully adorned face blowing one of those paper rollout whistle thingies. Another art piece that makes me chuckle and smile. Well done, Kaiya!

This sketch made me smile and chuckle. I call it the dancing pagoda wearing a sombrero while playing castanets, dancing and shouting "Ole!" You have the makings of a cartoonist and animator. Very lovely, Kaiya.
