Per Mitchell, "How I made it was I used a type of paint, cut out my design on a piece of foam, chose the color, got a rolling pin and rolled it onto my design. Then I placed the foam onto my piece of paper 4 times, using 2 different colors. Then I got a different design and a different color and did the same thing." (for his 2nd quilt art piece).
