Friedensreich Hundertwasser is one of my favorite Austrian artists! His use of biomorphic form is comparable to other greats such as Gaudí and Klimt. Now we can add Jessica to that list! At first one might consider this a rendering of a cartoon still from a Dr. Seuss (see what I did there?), however, as an example, if you look to the left of the artists' scene you will readily note the architectural motives seen in Viennese prints and buildings along the canals (notably: Villa delle Rose at the entry of the Giardino Eden, Giudecca, Venice). Hundertwasser's Transautomatism art theory is probably one of the art worlds greatest and, some may consider, lesser known achievements. In that, it draws the viewer into the work. I want to run and jump through the world Jessica has created! Brilliant! Great job Jessica and Ms. Cashel! Sources: Wikipedia, life, and a great art teacher at UNC-G.

In the time before the Winter Sun kingdoms were united against the dreaded Ink Blottians, the salvation of the Snow peoples relied on a small band of brave warriors whose skills with the long-sword and crudely shaped blades with which they would glide across the frozen rivers and lakes in valiant battle with the harsh beasts from beyond the Glades of Nromdoor. These warriors, though few in number, eventually banded together with the Snowmenian tribes and ultimate and decisive victory was theirs! The Kingdom of the Winter Sun was vanquished and saved! All the people gathered for a great feast and had a big snowball fight! And drank hot chocolate.

My first reaction to this piece was, 'Who is posting Georgia O'Keeffe on Jessica's art page?!' Then I realized Ms. O'Keeffe, while a fine artist in her own right, would have never been able to express the intricacies Jessica has with this piece. I recall our discussion about this piece, her mention of the composition representing a "pathway to the beach". How delightfully she ties in the varied meanderings in her minds-eye sojourn to sand and shore! Adding components of earlier works (neon colors representing vibrant flora and fauna), Jessica in essence takes our hand as we walk, unhurriedly, to the shore. Perchance discussing the field of poppies on our right or stopping to carefully study the lone starfish... In due course the viewer is drawn (lead perhaps?) to the very center of the work where he or she can decide to venture onto their own pathway to the beach. A visionary masterpiece! 4 Stars!

This master-work was actually commissioned by me after “Fall leaf”. The artist was asked to visualize a beach-scape at sunset. As the viewer can see, she captured, right handily, this vision of an idyllic end to a wonderful day of languishing on sand and surf! The linear progression of color from surf to sunset is transforming in that, with non-standard colors, the artist appears to interpret the spirits of the beach goer saddened at leaving the childhood wooly-comfort of days past spent in gleeful play as wave nipped and retreated from sandy fingers and toes. And yet, as the colors meld into a burnt-umber of settling sun, we feel the eternal pull of the ocean calling us as if to say, “Tomorrow, my friend, tomorrow!” A timeless vision indeed! 5 Stars!

Using nature as her backdrop for this piece, we can see the artist has taken a Warholesque technique to interpreting nature through the simple, yet complex, study of a leaf. The minute detail at the center glowing outwards is somewhat emblematic of Warhol’s Flowers, 1964 (Red, Pink and Yellow)- an early foray into his psychedelic-pop-culture iconoclastic signature. Jessica infers this with pastels; softening the edges and using non-linear, concentric lines that flow outwards giving the observer a feeling of warmth as well as the divination that, although the winter requiem is playing into a black background, spring will again return to glow and refresh the palette of Mother Earth. 4 Stars!

-- Ms. Cashel
- on September 30, 2013
*This* is art! Simple lines and colors blend to create a complex, non-linear composition that offers the viewer the pleasure of interpreting the piece from the perspective of the artist. And yet, the artist may well be aware that the viewer will look closer and see, perhaps, a Koi Pond in early winter. The fragile lines of an abandoned church's' stained glass window. The dark sky after a summer storm as the clouds drift away and the young lads and lasses go to gather plantains for the evening meal. A superb piece. 5 Stars!

The lines and composition capture the quintessential essence of early Egyptian culture as well as the vibrancy of the Nile Delta peoples (pre-Alexandrian era). This masterwork is captivating in that: The feline form lends to the cultural mores of the period where wealth and beauty were not only signs of social status but also state the bias of the elite. One would contemplate the finding of this entombed for thousands of years in a pyramid or sarcophagus yet Jessica has brought the stunning past of Egyptian culture to life for us all to appreciate and ponder the ancient wonders of the past. 5 stars!
