Think of scary cartoons if you want your picture to look scarey. The colors are dark. Red and orange may indicate danger and energy as you needed to show with your danger sign and thus chose the color red for the outer shape.

Neat work Laura. I think you can challenge yourself to create a creature with one of the more difficult emotions to illustrate.
