Very colorful and with winter coming on, this painting is bright and cheerful. Nicely laid out with good detail. I like this painting Maya. Vincent Van Gogh had many changes of style through out his short life, but was often not satified, though others liked his work. He even cut off his ear to improve his attitude. Unfortunately, it did not help his painting, but did affect his hearing! SO, DON'T CUT OFF YOUR EAR!!!!! Love, Grandpa

True to the style of les Fauves or “the wild beasts”, this piece is characterized by wild brush stroke and strident colors, with a view of the subject through high degree of simplification and abstraction. A true fusion of pointillism and neo-impressionism. Fauvism at its best!

Very colorful, I had to put on my shades!! Nice distinct color separation and all held together by the 'vine' overlay. Neat and much better than most of Gustav's work...

After a long summer hiatus, Maya has come out in full artistic force. The vibrant background colors speak to me of stained glass and lifesavers candy. The golden foreground appears in delightful swirls of the cooling fall air, somewhat reminiscent of ocean coral swaying in the tide. All in all a breakout piece perfect as expression of the artist's delight of her return to school.

I like the regal authority posed by the crown; the suggestion of motion and action from the tail. Most importantly this piece says to me "bee mine"

Hiya Maya, That is one big bee. If I saw that, I would have to run! Love ya, Grandpa

Very colorful! To build one of these snowmen, you would have to have a LOT of food coloring!!! But, it would be neat.

I am not sure what this was intended to be, but it makes me remember camping in the desert when I was a boy (last century). Often as the sun was setting, first a reddish glow would cover the desert and mountains, then it would be followed by colors of purple, that kept getting darker and darker until night was on us. Then, we would have a fire that made it seem very black, except for the millions of stars above... I really liked this Maya...

I liked this very much. It makes me look forward to Halloween and then to Thanksgiving... Good shadow work too.

Truly disturbing! To see a perfect heart on the left slowly be broken and stabbed so as to deflate and leak out all the blood, until all that remains is a flaccid and perforated version of its former self. Very deep understanding of the human condition, for a child so young.

I see this and all I can say is "Purple Haze" or maybe "Purple Rain"

Great use of light and shadow. The green of the field and dark of the sky put me directly in the pumpkin patch with Linus waiting for the great pumpkin. Appearantly the pumpkin has been struck on the head as he is seeing stars.

I think that this may be Maya’s version of an off-road snow wheel with studs. As for the color, well you have a point Matt.

Very disappointing representation of a wheel. Apparently artist has no understanding of form and function, because there is no way this is a wheel. In fact the color theory is a little weak as well because the color green is more blue than green. She has done better work; perhaps her dad helped her with this one...

I really appreciate the "fish egg" feel of the piece. It brings to mind the age old question of whether fish have feelings. A Forest and Stream article from 1890 addressed the issue in stating: I (C.H. Ames) have studied the matter very carefully and have made up my mind from various incidents that have come under my observation that fish are not sensitive to pain as are warm-blooded animals…Upon catching a fish I found a very coarse brown line hanging to it. Upon inspecting it more closely I found that the fish had in its side a very strong and coarse hook; to which the piece of line was attached. The wound must have been made a very short time previous to our catching the fish, for it was bleeding quite freely and looked very fresh, and If the fish could feel pain it would certainly have deterred it from taking our hook so soon after such an injury. (Forest and Stream. March 27, 1890) But I can tell by the artist’s use of color and form, that she would dispute the “lack of feelings”

I like this composition as it show a fluid mix of Jackson Pollock and Grandma Moses. This is not to belittle the Van Gogh (during his fully eared early career) and the cubist influence. However, the real reason I like this is because Maya did it and it is really pretty.

It is my understanding of that artist, that this piece has African influences with the ornate tribal work that makes up the abstract lion’s mane, continuing with the linear design and warm soft colors that were used to celebrate the masculinity of the male lion. As all great art work should do, it make each of us see what we need to see in order to satisfy our own contextual definition on what art is and should be.

Outstanding use of mixed media! The overall emotion I feel when viewing this piece is one of calm and peace. The use of lines suggest multiple paths in life and the blue grounds you while pink suggests heavenly spirt. The cycle of life is clearly represented from dawn to night transitions across the page. Breathtaking!!!

Great understanding of the Sun's magnetic field. I think she really captured the fact it is at less than half strength compared to the minimum of 22 years ago. Maya demonstrates the entire heliosphere, which fills the Solar System, has shrunk as a result, resulting in an increase in the level of cosmic radiation striking the Earth and its atmosphere. Exellent Work
