Ryan, I just played a slide show of all your art. Some of the pictures I don't remember seeing, so it was great to view them once more. I love your latest picture with the number 22. Is that your hockey number? Love, Grandma -- Sharon

Hi Ryan, I like the red house and the snowman in the front. What a big house; it fills up the whole page. Love, Grandma -- Sharon

Ryan, this is one of your best, I think. You can see that your "lizard" is so fast you couldn't keep him in the picture! I likd your use of color too. I seems you really took your time and put a lot of effort into this piece. Congratulations! Love, Grandma -- Sharon

Dear Ryan, This one I actually turned my computer upside-down to see. I think I can see another picture that way. Is that what you wanted? I hope you like the birthday present of art paper and GOOD art pencils. The pencils are meant to be only for artwork, so keep them separate from all your other markers and crayons. I think you can use them wet or dry and you can blend colors with them. Experiment a bit! Love, Grandma -- Sharon

Hi Ryan, This looks like Garfield! I don't know the reason for the "upside-down" title. Is it because you can also turn the picture around? I think you are taking after Eric when you draw cartoons like this. I like the way he looks so bored. Love, Grandma -- Sharon

Hi Ryan! I've never heard of this technique for drawing! You certainly have made some creative stuffed animals, not the kind you'd find in a store. I always enjoy your artwork, and I'm hoping that you will continue to work on it, because you are very talented! Love, Grandma -- Sharon

Ryan, your teacher must have sent a Thanksgiving piece of your art. I like the colors you have uses. It is unusual to have blue, and the pink waddle on your bird is also interesting. Did you cut and paste the colors? Love, Grandma

This tree is perfectly symetrical, isn't it? I can guess that perhaps you folded paper and cut it out, then pasted it onto the background paper. You could make Christmas cards out of this picture, Ryan. I like it! Love, Grandma

Ryan, these fall vegetables seem to be flying! How creative you are! I love the colors that you have used as a background. Sometime, I'd like to talk to you about your artwork. Love, Grandma

Hi Ryan, I see that you are continuing to create awesome work! This one looks like a halloween figure -- but maybe it isn'et scary to you! What does Arcimboldo mean? Keep up the good work! I think you are very talented. Love, Grandma

I like your royal-looking 'R', Ryan! Do you like calligraphy? This is the art of fancy or ornate writing, and it's something that I enjoy a lot myself. You can give your writing a lot of class! Did your teacher explain to you the history of illuminated letters? During the Middle Ages, before the invention of the printing press, monks and scribes spent hours and hours in rooms called "scriptoriums" to copy books by hand, using quill pens and bottles of ink. It took a long time, but some of their books were truly works of art. On the one hand, I'm happy that nowadays, we can reproduce books a lot faster (so that we don't have to wait nearly as long for a new book to be published). But on the other hand, I'm happy that artistic writing has not disappeared. YOU are helping to keep it alive!

Hi Ryan, When I was in college, I took and art course, and Matisse was one of my favorite artists! This portrait uses many of the same techniques that Matisse used. Love, Grandma

Hi Ryan, This is outstanding art work! It reminds me of the paper birch trees I used to see in Michigan when my family went there on vacation. There were more woods around them, but they also were near the water too, and they grew quite well in sand. We used to strip a little bit of the white bark off and write messages on them. I think the Indians did that too. Love, Grandma

What fine technique, Ryan! How did you achieve these interesting effects? The horizontal stripes of color in the sky are so neatly interrupted by the vertical lines of the birch trees. Did you use masking tape? What medium did you use? Is it watercolor? That is a very challenging medium, because it so easily bleeds where you don't want it to go, and you can never make something light again after you paint the paper dark. I always found acrylic or oil paint much easier. But watercolor can do great things! I bet lots of people like this picture of yours. I hope you had fun creating it!

Ryan, this is awesome! Is your school mascot a bulldog? I'm glad you used the colors of your school too. Your artwork is quite different than anyone elses, complete yours! Congratulations! Love, Grandma

I think this is my favorite one! The snowman seems to be peeking around the frame to say hello! What gave you the idea to just draw part of him like that? Love, Grandma

HI Ryan, I'm so glad your mom send your portfolio to me! Your picture is so colorful, and I can see what you love -- hockey, books, video games, the Simpsons movie --- there are other things too, but the picture was too small on my screen. Keep up the good work! Love, Grandma

Hi Ryan! It's so nice to see your artwork posted on the internet! You are a very talented artist! I like the colors you chose for the "All About Me" and "Winter Snowmen" pictures. The "Underground Worlds" picture, done in black and white, is nice too, and it looks like you could publish it in a comic book. Love, Mom
