“A Hot Dog For A Cold Winter” This mixed media masterpiece absolutely mesmerizes the viewer with its bold red backdrop and the subject’s brightly contrasting yellow and blue garment. It is the deconstruction of secondary color green, so commonly paired with red during the Christmas season, that shows the artists true understanding of the dynamic use of color. Additionally, yellow and red are also colors often used in Hot Dog makers branding is this a double entendre? Or at least a nod to this popular American past time. The dog showcased is clearly very large in scale compared to the trees in the background but the size of the snowflakes also leave us with questions. On their head you can see the depiction of what looks like a single large eye, the implication being perhaps that the animal communicates with some psychic telepathy. Is this their 3rd eye we are seeing? Only the artist truly knows. Taken at face value this is a cozy dog, snug as a bug in a rug with his sweater and cap, but when we look deeper we see so, so much more.

The striking dominance of the Christmas Tree in the image draws the eye directly to the center of the page. But it is upon closer examination of this work that we see the artists home life on display, the larger figures, the creators of the reality flanking the tree- the joy from the mothers laughter imitating the HO HO HO of Santa Clause. The adoring doe eyes on the father figures face capture the essence of awe that this holiday season can evoke. The artist depicts himself- a perspective of always with his brother, next to him and never without his perpetual companion Daisy, who happens to be also connected to Mother. Art imitates life. And above it all is Sampson a floating Angel watching over his precious family. This is a wonderful picture.

You can tell that the focus, for both the subjects and the viewer is the star atop the Christmas tree, one of the prominent figures eyes are large, reverant, and looking up in adoration while the other prominent figures eyebrows are emphasized- clearly indicating the surprise and elation of seeing the stellar tree topper, ignoring that the people in the picture are all depicted in Red, a chromatic link to the ornaments that I think we all can understand the subtext of.

I think the use of Negative Space is especially powerful. If not for the hard delineation provided by the artist, we wouldn't know where the spirits ended and the lack of spirituality, found in the world at large, begins. The references to Numerology are also clearly important, two pumpkins, two gravestones, two bats and yet 4 ghosts. I think we all understand what is being indicated there.

Wow this looks like a leap forward in stylistic realism. The bat, ghosts, haunted house, jack o lanterns and headstones really capture the essence of Halloween.
