Dean, I love the variety of bottle shapes and the colors in the bottles. It is also clever the way the bottles seem to be on a conveyor belt with the left bottle entering the room and the right one exiting. I would like you to clarify what the sign says above the vials - it did not come through on my screen. Love, Pops

Dean, I was very interested to read your teacher’s description of the project and the focus on human proportion and how three colors can be used to provide a three dimensional feel. Try googling “Vitruvean Man” to see how Leonardo da Vinci (the artist, not the ninja turtle) addressed the same issue. For your next project, try doing a self portrait with correct human proportions, and make your legs a little thicker.

Dean, I like this one on many levels. I like the seven black and white images within the film cells - they make you wonder what story they might tell. I also like the way the seven white squares float on the blue background. The curved shapes are quite whimsical. Keep up the good work. Pops

Dean, another great project. My first reaction is that the layers of color (yellow, purple, orange, then yellow again) have the effect of depth, almost as if you made a collage and laid each layer on top of the previous one. I also like the very top of your landscape which seems to use a totally different technique and reminds me of a famous New Yorker poster we have in our hallway that has NYC streets in the front and in the distant background is New Jersey and then California in the way back. Finally, who is this Patrick guy who seems to own lots of downtown real estate? Keep up the fun work.

Dean, is it possible Cottage just got a new kiln/oven? You sister just completed a ceramics project. I love that your guy has a personality with its eyes looking sideways and what I see as a stuck out tongue. Nice job.

Dean, this is an interesting process, though I was expecting that underneath the black layer, there would be colors. I do like the way you converted a project that was about using shapes into a space adventure. I would also like you to clarify what’s going on in the bottom left. Is it a space alien in space prison?

Dean, I like the way your teacher gives you different styles to try and mimic. It gives you a different perspective on the subject - I would not have thought to draw a cat with geometric shapes all over its face. I also like the way your cat seems o be cross eyed, maybe trying to see what is around its neck making all that noise. Nice.

Dean, I love so much about this one. I like the contrast between the black and white foreground and the colorful sky. I like the level of detail in the mountains and the little town - the shading on the mountains is very nice. I also like the color choices in the sky - blue, purple and green compliment each other nicely, very soothing. Nice job.

Dean, this definitely a favorite. I love the orange and black (Princeton) color scheme. And then when I zoomed in to see the details, I saw all the faces (and berets) on the food. I had to laugh. Finally, the chopsticks are neatly and casually placed across the box, which is a nice touch.

Dean, I am very curious to learn more about this young man. Why is he wearing a crown? Why is he smiling and still scaring me? Why is his chin so pointed? What is the red coloring on his left eye? Is this also a self portrait? Good artwork draws the audience into another world. Like this one.

Dean, the project description says this is a Gustavo style ghost. Since I do not know what the Gustavo style is, I am going to guess that many of the details I love are from the Dean style. I love the very detailed controller. I love the fact that the ghost is also a devil. I love the headset. And I love the sunglasses. Of course the ghost is floating. It is a bit surprising that he is floating on a pink and green background but I think it works.

Dean, I really like your color palette. The variations of light purple, green, yellow and pink soften the overall feeling, even though there are lots of sharper shapes like triangles and hexagons. It has a feeling of calm underneath the chaos. Well done. Pops

Dean, you continually intrigue me … so many questions. Why is the name William on one of the blue background pages? Is that a bone at the base of the project? Is the orange circle with a yellow band a floating face? And finally where are the waves that the project name mentions? Good art can stimulate questions and you have nailed it. Pops

Dean, I like that your art teacher shows you lots of different ways to be creative. Pottery can be challenging because you do not get to see the final result right away. You have to wait for it to come back from the ovens. My favorite part of your project is the top that looks like a Mexican sombrero.

Dean, there is a lot going on in your picture. I see giant waves, a volcano and lots of people dotting the landscape. There is even a fox or some other animal hiding behind a wave. I would love to hear the artist (you) describe all the details I probably missed. Fun.

Dean, I read your art teachers comments on the origins of this project, which was very helpful. Still, this piece gives the viewer plenty of room for making up their own story about what is depicted here. I see a Gorilla King who is able to fly between the mountain peaks of his kingdom using his butterfly wings. Of course he always brings his crown and scepter. Very fun.

Dean, clearly this art project is for Valentine’s Day. I like that your teacher gave you the chance to do four different versions of the project. And instead of just doing four different color combinations you give us four very different interpretations. I particularly like the Purple Heart with the eyes and hairyveyebrows. Nice.

Dean, there are several great elements in this painting. First, I like the way the sun radiates outward and the coloring goes from yellow to orange to pink. Second, the trees are layered in front of the sun and give the project depth. I am not sure what the splattering of blue is in front of the trees but it is an intriguing third layer. The overall effect is kind of eerie. Like it.

Another nice drawing Dean. I especially like the details on the screw top and the shadow at the bottom. The variety of stickers and decals on the water bottle are also fun. Keep up the creativity.

Dean, this is a fun project. Each of your snowmen has a different expression on their face. I like the one with the carrot nose looking sideways at his friend with the sunglasses. It also makes you appreciate the importance of perspective, looking up from the bottom of the huddle. Nice job.

Dean, it is good that we will be seeing each other over Christmas because I need you to explain this one to me. When I was pursuing an art career, sometimes people would have an immediate positive response and that put a smile on my face. Other times, I would explain the piece and the reaction was “aha”. And other times, even after I explained, the reaction was confusion. I look forward to you telling me about this interesting work.

Dean, I liked this one for several reasons. First, the colors are quite vibrant and engaging. Second, it looks like several different painting techniques were used- like the wavy scraping in the background. I also liked dark shading on the right of the plate that gives it a 3 dimensional feel. Finally, the bacon and eggs are realistic enough to make me very hungry, though I am not sure what the blue and black shapes are at the top of the plate. Well done. Pops

Dean, before I read the captions, I thought this was a picture of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade with the giant balloons floating over New York City. The actual pictures shows that Mickey Mouse is using some sort of laser to zap his enemies. I hope he is protecting the city against bad guys and it is not really a “city of destruction.” Art can definitely tell a story. As for the drawing itself, the tall skyscrapers are very well done, especially the one with the H for helipad on the top.

I see a lot of that Dean Toledo sense of humor in this piece, especially with the fly at the end of the long tongue. Well done.

Dean, I am guessing this one took a lot of work. From shaping the material (clay?), to adding different textures (scoring, dimpling), to baking it, painting it and glazing it, it must have taken several days. I like the end result a lot.

Dean, this project looks like it took a lot of very detailed effort to carefully weave the different strips both across and up and down the canvas. I like the result. I also like that while the strips form very consistent pattern, the circles are much more random.

Dean, this my favorite piece of DeanArt so far. The variation in color and the tiny sheep on the distant hills are very realistic. Of course, since I am three quarters Irish, I liked the overall purpose of the project.

Dean, stained glass is very old art form that was especially popular in churches. I took a class in how to do stained glass when I lived in San Francisco. Next time you visit, I can show you several of my projects. They look a little like your project.

Dean, this art project is both scary and funny. The dark background makes it scary, but the owl with sunglasses and lots of money was funny. Nice job.

Dean, this one fooled me at first. I thought it was a photograph! It looks so real. It obviously took a lot of effort and attention to detail, from the plate design to the tacos to all the fresh looking ingredients. Well done.

Dean, this might be my favorite Dean project so far. The bright, swirling colors remind me of Vincent Van Gogh, my favorite artist.

Dean, I remember doing projects like this during the fall when I was in school. The teachers are always good about including leaves into the classroom. It is interesting that all your leaves are blue, my favorite color.

Dean, I love that giant tree with all the bright fall colors. It reminds me of Vincent van Gogh, a famous painter.

Dean, Your second grade artwork is even better than your first grade work. Your drawing skills have definitely improved, and I like that your five candy corns seem to be having a great time. Love, Pops

Dean, you have been busy at the end of the school year! Picasso is one of my favorites. Did you know I tried to be an artist as a career when I finished college?

Another great project Dean. That little guy under the balloon looks really scared.

Georgia OKeefe is one of my favorite artists. Did you know she was married to a famous photographer named Alfred Stieglitz and she went to Teachers College where your Mama also went? At first I thought your picture was of a school of fish, but I like them better as clouds.

It looks a cold winter night in Sharon. I love the snow on the roof.

Another great project Dean! I love the “hot” red orange colors on the outside of the heart and the “cool” blue green colors on the inside.

Dean this is your best artwork yet. I love the delicate branches and the pink and purple flowers. Pops

Nice job Dean. The purple background color makes me feel like it is really cold outside with your snowman.

Dean, you have created another wonderful piece of art. The persons face looks a little scary, but at least he is wearing nice clothes and is standing in a beautiful field.

Dean, your skeleton was very scary until I saw that it was built with Q tips, then it was just fun.

Dean, this is a great picture! The part I like best are the colors that match the colors of leaves in the fall - orange, red, and yellow. You also made it look like a very windy day with all the leaves flying around. You must be at least seven years old to do just high quality work.

What a beautiful painting, Dean! I love how many colors you used. The way you painted the leaves makes it seem like the leaves are moving! Incredible.
